Hey guys how would you guys rate Columbia's School of law in terms of job placement(an individual graduating with good grades), academics, and anything else you would like to add in comparison to schools such as Stanford, Harvard, or Yale. Thanks.

Too vague.

Define “good grades”.

In terms of rankings, it isn’t “YHS”, but it’s at the top of the next pseudo-tier in the T14. Placements into biglaw should be strong as long as you’re in the upper quartile of your class.

Well to get into CLS one would need atleast a 3.7 gpa or higher so thats what i meant by good grades, Iam not sure how difficult their classes are but im sure alot of study time for 3 years will surely help lol.

If you want to be someone, I don’t recommend it.

what do you mean?

In terms of BigLaw placement, Columbia is on par with Harvard, so I’m not sure where this “upper quartile” language comes from. Last year, upwards of 65% secured a big firm job (70% from NYU).

Agreed, even in this economy the guy who said “upper quartile” needs to check his facts before dropping an uneducated opinion.

CLS has always been the foremost “biglaw” law school. There are a variety of factors behind this but the student body is geared toward biglaw, it has a reputation for putting more school resources toward biglaw, and so is it any surprise that biglaw firms see Columbia as fertile grounds for a large number of future associates?

There is a thread lurking around TLS but somewhere the data shows that CLS was #1 in biglaw employment 2 years ago and #2 last year. With so many CLS alumni working in these firms it’s not hard at all to find connections and partners who have CLS ties.

HYS is by far a better choice for prestigious clerkships and academia, and they will still have a better shot at biglaw (but the students there are more oriented toward PI, clerkships, academia, etc). But really CLS will get your foot in the door anywhere, if you are above median you WILL get a biglaw job if you desire it and work toward it.

Hope this helps OP. CLS still has good PI programs, and has enough prestige to get you into HYS-tier clerkships and academia but you will need to work harder for it - law review at a minimum - to compete the top 3.

kwu, do you go around these boards looking to trash Columbia at every chance you get? Are you butthurt over a rejection or something?
