hi i'm a korean living in korea, planning to graduate a korean high school(that just kinda came out..lol)

i'm dead scared about applying to american colleges cuz like i'm the only one preparing for it in our school and i practically know more than our so called 'counselor' does about the admissions, and i'm still learning new stuff everytime i log in CC(thanx, everyone!!!:-))

anyway, here are my stats :

i'm an american citizen(if that helps)

NEW SAT : (May) V/M/W 680/780/580 (i feel sick whenever i see that writing score..essay 6...I WAS NERVOUS) ~ 2060
(Oct) V/M/W 650/790/710 (essay 9) ~ 2150
SAT2 : Bio 800 Math 2c 800 (planning chem for nov... aiming for another 800)

gpa : 3.8~3.9(between there... korea uses a different scoring scale but i'm positive my converted GPA will be around there), and my school is a magnet school and teaches very rigorous classes

rank : our school doesn't rank

APs : none(didn't even know their existence until...like...Feb..lol)

ECs : 4 yrs class representative
captain of the english drama club - won the best club of the year
member of the school guidance council(Seun-do-bu)(group of 10 exemplary students of the school)
starting member of our basketball team during a match with an american army high school
tae-kwon-do 3rd degree black belt
a handful of leadership camps..
representative of school for the Asian Games Host City Allied Youth Camp
1st place in school english speaking contest
other insignificant awards...

voluntary work : around 100hrs

work ex : none (my school has a dorm, where all students without contageous disease have to live in, and the school hardly ever permits anyone to go outside except on weekends)

recommendations : dazzling, i think the teachers love me ;-)

app essays : writing skills will be pretty average, but the ideas will definitely be creative

MY SCHOOL LIST :
Duke
Cornell
JHU
Vanderbilt
USC
UNC
UIUC
UVA
UMich - Ann Arbor
UWisconsin - Madison
Purdue

thanks in advance for reading and i hope everyone has a wonderful day!!!:-)

P.S. i'm planning to major in biology... if there's any other university that anyone wants to suggest, please feel free to tell me, cuz as i said in the beginning, i'm still learning and desperate ;-(

What magnet school are you attending?

BTW, I am a Korean-American like you, and I have been told that being an Asian-American doesn't help at all. East Asians are overrepresented in American colleges.

I think you should add UC San Diego on your list. Its biology department is pretty damn good.

As a high school senior like you, I can't really rate your chances, but I thknk you will be considered a strong applicant because of your strength in science.

graduate a korean high school--> graduate from a Korean high school

One more thing. Did your school's basketball team play against Seoul American High School? Just curious.

nah, it was some school inside Camp Hialiah, which is based on Busan
and thanx for the correction^^

oh, and my school is BIHS, Busan Internation High School. it's not an international school as the name sounds so. it's a magnet school for kids who are gifted in Humanities(where ironically i've been studying a lot of science..lol)

about UCSD. isn't it very hard for an OOS applicant to get in?! i mean, i've seen ppl rating other ppl's stats, and OOS UC rates almost seemed to equal top-notch univs like UNC or U of Chicago...

You might want to consider Tufts as (from my personal observation on campus) there are many students accepted from Korea every year.

ucsd's a gorgeous campus
gorgeous city
gorgeous weather

i dont know about admittance rates, and they might screw you over on the financial aid.. i dont know for sure, you have to do that research yourself. i just know the school is very good, and your stats should get you in there

Unfortunately, I don't think your chances at Duke and Cornell are very good. Both schools have very competitive admissions, and nothing in your application seems particularly unique. Still, there are a lot of international Asian students at Duke, so that might help.

JHU could be a better match if you are interested in science, but it is also difficult to get in. I think you have a good chance at the others on your list.

I like the suggestion of Tufts - a little reachy due to its competitive nature, but not as reachy as, say, Duke. I would suggest Brandeis - strong in science, and in the Boston area (great place to be a student!).

i was thinking of Duke and Cornell as wild shots anyway :-P you just never know, right?! :-P

and thanx for all ur advice, snuffles sunkist16 dukeclassof09 ohio_mom

my moderated list :

Duke(I put Cornell just cuz it was an Ivy^^;;;)
JHU
Vanderbilt
USC
UNC
UIUC
UVA
UMich - Ann Arbor
UWisconsin - Madison
Purdue
Tufts
UCSD

and can anyone tell me the chances i can get for financial aid?! cuz i really need them..

I wouldn't expect financial aid from any of the UC's. I really don't think you'll like going to a UC because not only will you have to pay out of state tuition which is pretty much like paying for a private school, but there's a very high probability that you may not be able to graduate in 4 years due to the inability to get classes. Financial aid at privates will be more generous than publics, but I doubt by much unfortunately. Is there any way you can win a scholarship in korea or find someone/some organization to sponsor you?

I checked out some of them, but all of them were egligible for Korean citizens...

Doesn't my USA citizenship give me a better chance to financial aid?!

oh shoot i totally didn't see the american citizenship. Forget everything I said above.

whew~ you scared me :-P

do you do IB then? because if you dont take honors courses thats a bit ehh=/

Duke-reject
Cornell-reject/deferral
JHU- ummm possible.
Vanderbilt- accept/waitlisted
USC- you'll probably get in..but then again USC is a pretty asian-dominated school
UNC- rejected UNC is something lke 80% instate.
UIUC- accept
UVA- not sure
UMich - Ann Arbor- kinda iffy on this one too. a lot of people are applying here, highly competitive
UWisconsin - Madison-accept
Purdue-def accept
