Rate my chance

Hi! I'm quite new here. Can someone please rate my application?

I'm new here in California. I took high school from the Philippines, and I started college last fall. As of now, I'm taking Calculus, Psychology and Philosophy, along with high school level English.

I'm planning to major in Chemical Engineering.

I made my own schedule for the next two years, and so far I don't think I can do the Organic Chemistry Sequence as well as the Biology sequence (Both are not required, and I don't think they're recommended too). If all goes well, I'd be transferring with all the Math, Physics (even 7C equivalent), General Chemistry, English courses needed for admission. I also can get one Engineering course (Engineering 45).

I counted my transferrable credits, and the sum is 61 units.

I am deeply interested in Chemistry, as I am very curious about matter and the environment. I preferred to get Chemical Engineering because I don't think I'll be researching all my life. I am creative and imaginative as describe by my former mentors, and I also find these qualities in myself.

Next semester I'm planning to join the Math and Science club in our community college to have more insight about Chemistry. If the Filipino Club gets revived, I'll join them instead of the Honors Club.

As of now, I do volunteer tutoring at our campus in Math.

I don't have work, but next semester I am planning to volunteer in tutoring Math once again.

Do you think I have the slightest chance of getting admitted if I get a GPA of 3.7-3.9? I heard that they want people who have completed the most requirements. Does Berkeley prefer people with a rich cultural background? Or they solely look at your GPA, Personal Statement, and prerequisites completed?

Oh, I'm a green card holder BTW.

I just hope I get in, I always wanted to have quality education in preparation for my career in the future. =]

Copy pasted this from the official chance thread. Figured no one's gonna reply there. Thank you!

^ what’s your class rank?
Why don’t you apply to UP Diliman or De La Salle?

Well, I’m here now. UP did not accept me because of my mediocre high school grades, but I did really well with UPCAT. DLSU is far to expensive, and AFAIK they don’t give loans.

What do you mean by class rank? In high school? Something like the top 40%. Right now in CC I’ve been getting A’s with minimal effort.

correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t bio a prereq for ChemE majors? Ochem?

if you haven’t completed 1 prereq then they will not accept you.

I don’t think you have a chance for UCBerkeley. Maybe you should try it (you never know), but also send your resumes to the other UC schools and Cal State Schools.

Chemistry is highly ranked at UCB and your gpa and ‘high school level English’ will not look well on the application.

It’s not a prerequisite, but it’s needed for graduation. I’m not taking it because the Bio1 (3 units lecture + 2 units lab I think) course of Berkeley is fulfilled by two lab courses (9 units) in my college.

And I emailed Berkeley a while ago, here’s the response:

"The strongest chemical engineering transfer applicants are those who have completed most of the courses for the major as listed on assist.org and have achieved mostly A’s in those courses. It’s fine for you to apply without organic chemistry since you will be taking other courses (Physics 7C and Engineering 45) that will help your application. Please note that Physics 7C is not required for graduation; however, it will fulfill the science elective should you choose the open elective program instead of a concentration. When we read applications, completion of Physics 7C does count and will help your application.

If you aren’t admitted this time around, you may apply again next year."

I’m planning to send out resumes for other schools as well, I just want to know if I have a chance at Cal.

I’m also wondering if they have an eye for students with a unique background.

Well, about English, will they even look at non-transferrable courses? Won’t they give me some consideration since I’m an ESL student?

I think I can get a lot of A’s in CC, so don’t mind my GPA. About my high school grades, I read somewhere that they won’t even look at it if you’re a transfer applicant.

w/ a 3.7-.9 you should be fine.
Unique backgrounds are nice but grades, completion of prereqs/IGETC and your personal statement are more important.

Grades = Check
Prereqs = ??? Well, based on my schedule, I would be done with the prerequisites. Bio is just an extra course that would count, as well as Physics 7C and Engineering 45.

Is the personal statement really that important?

Now, I’m really scared if A LOT of “more qualified” applicants have done EVERYTHING in IGETC. So far, I wouldn’t be able to do Organic Chemistry, a Computer Science Course, and Biology.

My only backups are SJSU and Davis. With SJSU, I have like 3 classes to catch up. With Davis, I just hope they won’t be uber selective.

Am I just thinking too much or what. I’m losing sleep because of this.
