Bump! Anymore feedbacks? I've also qualified for several national olympiads (like USAMO, biology, and chem) but I still think my mediocre GPA killed me and my chances... :[

Mediocre?!
...
I do believe you have to go and look in Harvard University's "Accepted" thread on CC. There are plenty of people who got in without a 4.0. You're actually in really good shape =)

All your stats are impressive, but your aura ("mediocre GPA") is downright annoying. Feigning humility will impress no one in any interviews. Talk to your favorite teachers and ask each of them to describe you in two words. . . That is a good start to some really good essays that YOU would write. What drives you? Where do you want to be in 10 years and why! Clearly, you have a golden opportunity for admission anywhere. However, my d's school valedictorian had nearly perfect credentials and was denied at Harvard and is still waiting on Yale. In the interim he has received a full scholarship to another really great school.

The point is to keep everything in perspective. Don't have a chip on your shoulder BECAUSE you are Asian or key people will notice. You cannot do anything about it anyway.

Good luck!

okay, some updates, though won't make much of a difference
SAT II
biology : 800
literature: 770 (sucks, i know)

ap scores (i'm going to just guess, since i haven't gotten them back for all)
5's on all except maybe us hist and span (definitely 4's on those)
so i think i'll get national ap scholar
so anyways those are my random stats

any more takers on whether i'll get into HYPSM?

Um I can't tell if you are a troll or not. If you aren't, I have soem advice..

First of all, not even HYPSM will care about your one B+ in Spanish. You keep mentioning it so much that I feel like you are going to write an essay explaining it--that would be ill-advised. Secondly, a 770 in literature is far from "terrible." Personally, I think it is incredibly impressive for someone so accomplished in science and math. How often do you think MIT gets Asian math-y/science-y applicants with 98%+ percentile scores in literature?

You have an amazing chance but anything can happen...but still i would say 90%+

i saw a person on CC here that said his son got 2400/USNCO finalist and was rejected from Harvard and waitlisted in MIT

And i personally know a guy that got 2350 SAT/4.0 UW GPA with 10 APs/Siemens regional finalist/USNCO qualifier/4x AIME qualifier/and obviously a bunch of ECs with those stats like science research, science+math club leadership..., (im pretty sure im right about the stats since ive heard this from multiple sources) that was waitlisted at MIT (those stats are about equal to yours, if not better)

of course thats not to scare you because ive seen far less qualified people than you get accepted easily, but im just saying at this level its a crapshoot...

and who knows why that person got rejected? but hes going to another on of the HYPSM schools anyways...so it doenst matter

i think if you had like one more big award like qualifying for one of the olympiads i could say you were guareenteed (or if you get Intel STS finalist lol)

Yeah, you're fine. Extremely well rounded (The only thing I don't see is athletics).

And you're not the first to be brought down by the horrors of foreign language. My only Bs in high school are AP Biology and Spanish.

You are truly ignorant to dwell on a 3.98 and a 770 on a test. I see booksmarts, but not someone who can get a clean grasp on reality (e.g. you're human, which implies you're bound to make a mistake).

Sounds like your parents and your guidance counselor are the same; don't listen to them, it obviously rubs off.

"You are truly ignorant to dwell on a 3.98 and a 770 on a test. I see booksmarts, but not someone who can get a clean grasp on reality (e.g. you're human, which implies you're bound to make a mistake)."

Completely agree--you captured it well. It kind of frightens me that so many people like the creator of this thread are the people populating HYPSM--hopefully the four years there will disabuse them of the insanity that got so many of them there..

lol too many people shoot for colleges...i wonder, dashboard, when you did those research projects for ISEF, were you thinking more about how those projects can help society or that they can help you get into a better college if you won?

back to this B+ business... one B+ in all of high school means nothing. no admissions officer in their right mind would reject you solely because of one B+. but since you killed spanish 5, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

forget you have a B+. please.

Yes I agree with blah1290, so many people on HYPSM give up their entire lives and do things they would rather not do purely for college.

Whether you're one of them I'm not sure but I do despise this 'mediocre' attitude of yours concerning a 3.98 GPA and a 770 Literature. You've done all you can/compromised everything you enjoy (either one cos I don't personally know you) and now you ought to relax and just chill. Btw why did you do Literature SAT IIs when you got 2400 already for SAT IIs. And are you applying to HYPS due to prestige because Caltech, Stanford and MIT seem better fits for you.

B+ as a non Hispanic once is no big deal at all. You're either fine or you've given up some of the best years of your life to play the college game. I hope its the former.

zomg, I didn't realize how prestigious the Davidson Fellows scholarship is until just now. Go to their website, and look at the work of past winners, people.

I can't relate as much to you, because you're on the math/science side of things, but omg the literature people are ridiculous.

Requirements: 60-75 page portfolio containing significant displays of 3 out of the following 4 genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, screenplay.

Dude, I know you were an honorable mention and not a scholarship winner, but that's still legit.

College game is an epic fail

IMO, have fun until junior year, then start playing the game.

dude you're crazily amazing... like totally... i mean... there's probably nothing one could do to get a better chance... it is a crapshoot though... but well yeah... in terms of chances, you're like the first on anybody's list, i'd say! keep rocking!! :)
PS: would be great if ya could check you my thread too and gimme a chance... univ names on page 2. thanks! :) http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/507610-foreign-student-i-m-hypms-right-7.htmlPPS: omigawd... am going green with envy after seeing your thread... hehe! (Y)

how did you manage to take AP Calculus AB as a freshman?

nooooo....how can you think hypsm is a crapshoot for me...my life is ooooooooover
just kidding...ignore the previous statement. what do you guys think of my list of safeties? i'm looking into a chemistry or biomedical engineering program
-caltech
-ucla
-ucberkeley
-boston u
-columbia
-cornell
-pennstate
-brown
-university of michigan
-usc
not really sure what are safeties...i'm pretty confident i'll get into berkeley cuz have done stuff there. what about the others?

You're in. I am completely blown away. And it helps that the B+ was in Spanish and not something like math or english :) Depending on your essays and recs, I think you'll be one of the top applicants anywhere you apply (I think)

Go for it, you have a chance. Nothing is guaranteed though, so keep that in mind ;D Hope to see you next year.

Were you at ISEF 2008?
