(sorry for the repost, the original is in the College Admissions section. Could an admin please delete that thread?)
Hey guys, I'm starting to apply to colleges (Mostly Ivies) and my E.C.'s are really worrying me. If you guys could maybe rate my EC's on a scale of 1-10, I'd be eternally grateful.
Internships/Leadership Conferences
1. Interned with a research scientist at a local university, learned how to do basic processes such as PCR, etc.
2. Interned with an elected state official this year
3. Applied for and attended a competitive leadership program that lasted 4 weeks, while there I interned and helped translate at a majority-hispanic free clinic (paid $1000 stipend)

200+ hours of Community Service

eeeh. great for normal school, but not too amazing for ivy. the average ivy applicant is the president of at least four school clubs, won many awards, did research, 500 volonteer hours, …etc. You seem to have a very minmal amount of solid leadership positions.

Really? I have a friend that only had one leadership position, never did a research project, was an over-represented minority, and still got into Brown… My test scores are well above average for Ivy Leagues, but whatever. So would you consider my ECs subpar for Ivies? Thanks for the feedback!

I think your ECs would be a reach for the Ivies

I’ve been told my 5000 a month business won’t get me in :/

But if your grades + sats are good, i’d try applying :)

I ans on your earlier post; pls see it. I do not understand the crits by posters here; perhaps they are competition.

Some of the information here is ludicrous. The number of presidencies that you hold is meaningless. They want to see that you actually did something with those presidencies. They don’t count leadership positions, they count achievements and see whether you made an impact, which you have.

Also, the amount of money you make from your business doesn’t matter much either unless you are earning 6 digits. If you are doing well, great, but what they look for is initiative and if you want to study business/economics at university, then you are doing exactly that. Even if you aren’t making that much, you are showing perseverance and dedication.

You should tell us how many hours a week you spend for each EC, in order for a decent rating but superficially, I would give 6-7/10 with 5 being an average Ivy applicant.
