rate my ECs

Ok. Seeing as I am gonna be a senior in about 2 weeks I'd like to know what you CCers think about my ECs. Do they suck/ok/great/whatever?

-Knowledgebowl club (vice-president, team member, we got 3rd place in centralamerica last year)-2yrs (I've been there since it was created)
-Tutoring underprivileged kids- 2yrs
-German lessons- 4yrs
-Student council secretary- this year
-Volunteer at the national children's hospital- permanent volunteer 2yrs
-Electric guitar lessons- 6 yrs
-Classical guitar lessons-2 yrs
-Emo band- lead guitar and composer- not really sure anymore, must be around 4 yrs
- Various ensembles- we play stuff ranging from mozart to metallica- 2 yrs. We played this year at the school band concert, first time that they let an outside group play. We have scheduled a recital at the national university to play an adaptation of a series of mozart's works for a tribute to mozart (we're gonna play them with: 1 piano, 2 electric guitars, 2 classical guitars and a bass), then we're also gonna play a few King Crimson songs at a festival that the university's music faculty organizes. And finally I'm gonna play, along with a friend, the guitar for a musical that a senior composed. We're presenting it at the same university.
-DJ lessons- 1 yr... yeah I know haha, but its awesome. I love it, because I compose stuff on my guitar and then mix into electronic music.
- I took a Costa Rican stock exchange course along with some friends

Thats about it... I want to study econ/business/ or engineering in case someone is interested in seeing how my ECs relate ( if at all) to my desired major.

Your ECs would be great if you were going to do something music related...

I'm seeing a lot of guitar/band stuff that wouldn't really relate to economics, business, or engineering.

ECs should reflect your interests in what you do...

An aspiring journalist doesn't get anywhere in journalism if all he does is participate in math competitions and science fairs... in fact, I'd be either wondering why he's aspiring to be a journalist, or why he's doing so many math/science activities

how about music business? You seem interested in music -- so that might be a natural way to go.

otherwise, college here I come is correct -- the EC's don't match what you say your future interests are.

What colleges are you looking at applying for and what are your stats?

to many colleges, EC's are not at all important -- it is mostly numbers driven.

to highly selective schools (where EC's are important) they are not very unique and will not help you stand out as I read them.

^ I agree...ure ec's are unfortunately VERY COMMON....forget any top 10 schools with those kinds of ec's....im being practical.....i advice u do to some internships over the summer with college profs and parciticipate in those siemen's westinghouse comp or intel talent search.

otherwise...anything below top 10 u have GREAT chances...with good sat's..etc.

ok thanks. Yeah I would like to do some internships , I'm gonna see what I can get. Besides thath my general stats are:
full IB diploma
Math HL
Spanish A1 HL
Physics SL
TOK
English A2 HL
Economics HL
Business and management SL

GPA: 4.13 W 8 rnaked 3rd in my class)
SAT= 800CR/740M/730W

My dream school is Upen...but I gues you guys are right, I probably won't really stand a chance there seeing as most applicants have awesome scores and I would need my ECs to set me apart.

bump... hehe

Write an awesome essay

Your ECs do not have to relate to what you want to study in college, necessarily. For example, you can join music groups in college without being a music major or even taking any classes. I know of someone who is in an Emo band at UPenn and majoring in econ, so it is definately possible to do something like that. Yes, your ECs do not necessarily stand out but they are more than respectable. By the way, where are you from? Are you applying as an int'l student, because that could affect your chances?

I'm from Costa Rica. So yes I'm, an international. I know this might affect my chances, but I had a really nice chat with my grandfather today and found out that his is gonna pay for my education , so I won't require FA at all ( in case that helps).

megaman -- I think you have an excellent chance at any school. I think the critical point is going to be your focus and how well you communicate your uniqueness, your passion and your talent.

As an international who doesn't need FA, that is good. You have excellent stats. work on some focus with your ec's and you will do well!

You can love Lacrosse with all your heart and passion, but that doesn't mean you're going to or need to become a Lacrosse player.
