Rate my ECs!

Please rate my ECs! I'm planning on applying to a few Ivies (HYP/Dartmouth/Brown), a few top-tier schools (Tufts, NYU), and a few LACs (Middlebury/Swarthmore). I'm a sophomore, so of course I'm not completely sure about which colleges I'm applying to just yet; this is just a rough idea.

Even though I'm a sophomore, I've already been guaranteed a few leaderships positions when I'm an upperclassman. I'm also assuming that I will continue these ECs throughout my senior year.

-Literary Magazine (Founder/Editor-in-Chief (9-12))
-Newspaper (Editor-in-Chief (11), Managing Editor (12), Editor (10), Writer (9))
-Town Newspaper Internship (Monthly articles published in town newspaper; I'm treated like an actual reporter (compensation and all) (10-12))
-Library Community Service (volunteered at the public library for 25 hours; I hope to have about 100 hours there by senior year; (9-12))
-Summer Writing Workshop (Co-Founder; through the literary magazine, we are trying to create a summer writing workshop for middle school students; it'd be free and count as community service)

-Cross Country (Likely to be captain; JV/V (9-12))
-Winter Track (Varsity starter/letter winner; Captain; (9-12))
-Spring Track (Varsity starter; Captain; (9-12))
-Track Camp (Instructor; over 80 hours of community service by senior year)

...hence the username runningwriter; most of what I do revolves around running and writing...but I do a few other things as well.

-Habitat for Humanity Club ((9-12); possibly a positions as an upperclassman)
-Tennis (Varsity club team (outside of school); I've had lessons since elementary school)
-Math Team (Regular/Varsity) (10-12)
-Art Club (10-12)
-French Club (10-12)

I don't have too many awards...or at least ones that are considered significant. Is this a problem when applying to top-tier schools?

-High Honor Roll
-I received this in school award in quarter one of my freshman year; the award is usually reserved for juniors and senior; also, the last freshman to get the award was 5-6 years ago.

I love how your EC’s center around writing and running and seem focoused.
Keep it up and you’ll have a good shot at the schools you aim for.

Thanks Haitian!

Very impressive for a sophmore! 9-10! Keep up the good work! You have alot going for you! Keep in mind, unless the voting has already been done, you are never guarenteed anything (leadership position). But honestly, don’t worry about this as a freshmen.

On a side note, you don’t have a safety school yet. The colleges you are looking at are all very competitive.

Thanks! When I said guaranteed leadership positions, I meant things like the newspaper. I’m a minor editor now, and anyone who gets this position automatically becomes editor-in-chief later on. But I know what you mean, by not assuming I’ll get anything.

I was hoping Boston University or maybe Northeastern would be a safety?

I’m not sure if you know, but safety’s tend to be public-state schools. A safety is something you KNOW 100% you’ll get into.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/656077-generic-chance-thread-chance-me-i-ll-chance-you-back.html

Chance me?

So…UMASS?

Yeah, if it’s a state school, it can qualify for a “safety”. But I do think you can get into plenty of these schools. You NEVER have a private school/competitive school as your safety! Even if you are a great candidate.

Okay, thanks for the advice! Yeah, UMASS is a state school. I think you can be automatically accepted if your MCAS (MA state testing) scores are high enough. I guess that would count as a safety.

Any other opinions on the ECs?

Bump.
