URM (hispanic - Mexican American)
1st generation to go to college
1st generation to graduate Highschool
single parent (mom)
income = $12,600 (according to 2004 income tax)
My mom 14 when I was born
Didnt know my birth father --> thought one man was for quite sometime, turned out negative.. spent many years trying to figure out
Nasty neighborhood!
Worked once I was of legal age 16-> 2 summers - 40 hrs a week

Shard, you are a Grade A insensitive douche who also cannot read. She's obviously referring to the fact that she grew up in a home with a single mother, and isn't a single mother herself.

7.5/10 - Good luck to you!
I'm a hispanic male too and I'm applying to mostly Ivies. Does being gay count as a hook (if I wrote about my homosexuality in my essays)?

P.S. Shard, you're the one that ought to get out more. Get out and meet people from different backgrounds. You gave the guy a 5 because he is Hispanic and based on some hasty presumptions? That's low. Sorry, honest or not, your racist attitude will not be tolerated on this thread. Please get out more and lose the attitude! Thanks :)

The UC system may consider the following under their *"educationally disadvantaged"** policies:*

These others may be shared in a personal essay, but only to the point of demonstrating *how you overcome challenges** in your life:*

My kind? Am I not human? Homo sapien, just like you, Shard. Or does the fact that I'm homosexual make me less human? If you respond in the affirmative, let me assure you, TONS of CCers will retaliate!
No I am not desperate. It's a part of who I am, and not every applicant is homosexual, just like not all applicants are Hispanic, or of the lowest income bracket, or nationally recognized athletes or scientists. A hook is something of that nature. Hmmm... looks like I answered my own question.
Shard, scroll up and re-read my original post. I edited it to include something directed toward you specifically. I'll stress it again - drop the negative attitude.

Way to jump to assumptions. No, I just happen to think you are very stupid people who are going to look even stupider once you keep trying to bring up those kinds of hooks.

I'm not jumping to any assumptions Shard...
Isnt everyone on this board trying to find their 'hooks'?
You basically insulted everyone on this website

Besides, like APDoolitttle said... these 'hooks' are apart of us? I see no harm in saying where I've come from, and who I am.

Those are great hooks, I think. If you're applying to ivy leagues you probably have great grades and SAT scores, so you've probably overcome a lot to be able to achieve so much. Not a lot of people in your situation are going for the ivy leagues.

And gay people are not a "kind"! I'm not gay, but some of the kindest, smartest, and funniest people I know are. Gayness probably isn't any kind of hook, since a huge gay community isn't the biggest moneymaker for colleges, but it doesn't mean you should never mention that kind of thing in an essay. Because all of the billions of homophobes make everything harder.
