"Let's celebrate each other's hooks. There's no need to disparage anyone!"

Its insulting to me that you would take something that is supposedly innate and a part of you and abuse it to please an adcom. Go ahead, have a hispanic party or a gay orgy. Shard is just saying that its unfair for you to benefit from the way you were born, something that is supposedly OUT OF YOUR CONTROL, while others can't.

He was also born into a single-parent family in a rough neighborhood that doesn't make a lot of money. I imagine you benefitted from being in a significantly better situation

The more posts I read by Shard, the less I like him, and the more I want to take him out. Seriously. If you think you're smart, I'll beat ya. If you think you're strong, I'll beat ya. If you think you're clever, you are ****ing screwed. Don't act like a friggin whore monkey and maybe then you will get some constructive responses to your posts.

No, senior200610, NOT AT ALL! I guess you missed the part where I said, "It's a part of me." I focused on how it has shaped my life and how I've become stronger from it. Not all gay people are the same. My life experiences are very different from the next gay guy's, and THIS uniqueness is what I focused on - NOT on the sole fact that I'm gay. What good would it do if I didn't elaborate? The adcom would shrug and say, "So what if he's gay... so are a good hundred of the other applicants according to their applications." So, to distinguish myself, I made my essay personal; I made it my own; I made it representative of ME (not of just any gay guy).
And that comment you made about having a Hispanic party or a gay orgy was totally unwarranted! I'm sure I was more offended by that remark than you were about the trivial bit you were complaining about before. Please leave your negative comments (and possible insecurities about yourself) OUT of the thread. Thanks :)

this is a thread on rating hooks, so when you mention your gayness, logic says...

gay = hook

ah the plight of white middle-class males. Maybe someday we'll be able to proudly define ourselves with a 3-letter acronym and benefit from our oppression. What a paradox!

Hmmm... paradox indeed. Did I mention that I consider myself Colombian AMERICAN? While I was born in Colombia, I was raised here in the U.S. I am also in the middle class and can sympathize with your feelings to an extent. But calling me hot tempered b/c I defended myself? Who do you think you are to tell the people on this thread to "have a hispanic party or a gay orgy"?
And by the way, the noun Hispanic is always capitalized! It must be your subconscious racist angst at play, in the most subtlest detail of capitalization (or lack thereof). Sheesh. Let's stop fighting!
What (if any) are your hooks senior?

lol this is why I didnt want to list my hooks and ask for people to rate them

The issue of Affirmitive Action comes up and then everything goes downhill

I dont ask for sympathy nor do I ask someone to give me acceptance because I come from a bad community.

I dont want to meet some minority ratio that a certain school has to uphold each year.. No, I want to gain acceptance into a school because of my merit. Because I have worked hard to get where I am.
If there is a white person more qualified than I, and has better stats....
then I wouldnt mind giving up my spot.

But we live in a world where Race is incredibly significant, and socioeconomic backgrounds have an incredibly effect in admissions

Either way, some of the people on these forums are incredibly arrogant and Shard is a prime example..

I thought this thread died :D though I was hoping it wouldn't. I was just afraid to add anything for fear of starting WWIII on CC!! From now on, anyone who posts on this thread will do so with an open mind and out of a genuine concern to provide constructive suggestions and opinions. Posters will respect fellow posters and will not disparage them or post anything offensive. Agreed?

I think that your essay sounds like it really represents you, Doolittle. Gook Luck with admissions. Beattiful mistake, think you have good hooks. Some of the people that have posted on this thread are just ignorant.

Thanks alright then :)
Ok, I'm logging out of CC. This has turned into an addiction! I have to finish an AP Bio lab :( They should make a CCers Anonymous Hotline!! Wait... then again, maybe they shouldn't b/c then I'd be on that all the time and it would just be another addiction (possibly 2)!! Ok, I'm rambling. Good night everyone. I hope all future posters agree to my proposition (please scroll up to read it). CC threads really ought to be positive and filled with contructive criticism - not nonchalant ignorant remarks. Take care and good luck to all!

Im really sorry but for the UC's your disadvantagedness isnt going to do much this year. UCB has totally stopped looking at race and UCLA gives little regard.

Its a lie to say UCs dont look at race. A disadvantaged hispanic or black is a lot more appealing than a rich asian or white kid. Thats where the admissions stories come in. For schools, its all about praising their diversity - im sure you have heard this when you have visited colleges.

A disadvantaged hispanic or black is a lot more appealing than a rich asian or white kid.

its possible to not consider oneself disadvantaged, but not at all be rich

that was the most racist remark so far. You're insinuating that blacks and hispanics are immediately = to disadvantaged. And miraculously asians = rich. Well, I'm pretty sure both were given the same awful treatment 50 years ago, but somehow only blacks/hispanics are some how at a "disadvantage." We all have our disadvantages, doesn't matter what your ethnicity is.
