Elementary insults would be closer to "at least I know who my dad is."

Once again proving my point

A job well done!

I'm providing examples, you're throwing out unintelligent rhetoric. Are you proud now, or just upset that your hooks weren't quite as good as you originally thought?

Okay this is my last comment on this thread
Since you MUST have the last word

My hooks are enough, at least I have some.. and for that I'm incredibly happy

Not as good as I originally thought? Because one person disagrees with not only myself - but everyone else who has posted on this thread..

I'm set man, thankyou for all your wisdom - you wise kid you!

22loo haha

shard, I have no idea what your situation is, but why are you so combative? Is it so hard to acknowledge that someone else has achieved something, overcome something, or embraced their identity and that is something to be proud of? Other people have it tough sometimes, perhaps you could just say something like hope things go better for you, or congrats on being proud of being gay. If you don't agree that these are hooks, this can be simply stated without being insulting.

When it comes to hooks, I will have to agree with Shard. Hooks are something that you achieve that will make the admissions officers go "oooh ahhh" (including overcoming huge obstacles), not circumstances that one was born into. Tip factors are more of the factors that you have no control over like being a URM, low income, and etc.

URM (hispanic - Mexican American)- TIP FACTOR
1st generation to go to college-TIP FACTOR
1st generation to graduate Highschool-TIP FACTOR/(possible HOOK depending on how you work it)
single parent (mom)-TIP FACTOR
income = $12,600 (according to 2004 income tax)-TIP FACTOR
My mom 14 when I was born-TIP FACTOR
Didnt know my birth father --> thought one man was for quite sometime, turned out negative.. spent many years trying to figure out-TIP FACTOR
Nasty neighborhood!-TIP FACTOR
Worked once I was of legal age 16-> 2 summers - 40 hrs a week-HOOK!!!!!

You only have ONE real hook (three if you scored above an 1900 on the SATs and if you can somehow combine all your tip factors into a huge HOOK), and you have 7 TIP FACTORS. I commend you for overcoming many obstacles, and I hope you keep on striving. I know you may get annoyed for someone just writing off your circumstances as tip factors, but you have a whole lot going for you, and I wish you good look on the admissions process.

Just my opinion..

"three if you scored above an 1900 on the SATs and if you can somehow combine all your tip factors into a huge HOOK"

Where did the 1900 come from?
Just wondering

I was thinking 600,600,600 combination, but then I thought 650,650,650 would be more favorable, so I just decided to pick the one that seemed to be in the middle...just to be safe the MINIMUM if you are applying to ivy schools (which you are, sorry looked at some of your posts) should be 1800. I'm sure there are people who have gotten in with lower test scores, but the higher your scores, the less you would have to worry about getting rejected and deferred based on scores. Also, the skating thing could work as a HOOk depending on how you approach it. :)

lol i see

thank you!
yeh hopefully things will work out in the end.

No offense, but what exactly is the point of this thread? It seems like you are fishing for compliments/looking for reassurance that you should get into a good college because of your hooks. Then again, that IS what the vast majority of what are my chances posts are. Best of luck either way

yeh just looking for reassurance

just like everyone else ;)

Shard get rejected from JHU! Shard angry! Shard think URM took his spot! RAWWWWWWWWRRRRRRRRR

FACT: The SAT costs $41.50.
FACT: Shard was thinking about taking the SAT for a fourth time.
FACT: This would cost a total of $166.
FACT: OP's mom made $12,600 last year
FACT: These 4 tests were 1.3% of OP's mother's income last year.

Judging by OP's mother's salary of $9/hour, we'll say she sees about 75% of that after taxes, it would take her 24 hours to earn all the money that Shard would have taken using these 4 tests. Which comes back to a point I made earlier, that not being poor provides you with many opportunities.

Plus, when your family needs money and you live in a rough neighborhood, how easy would it just be to push to make some extra money? OP got out and will now being going to college

Aren't fee waivers available for the SAT

I've gotten one fee waiver for SAT I, and one for SAT II
But, I decided to retake both (just like many others on this site) .. just to increase my chances - But I couldnt get fee waivers for those :
