Is it worth upwards of 50-100k in loans to attend Cornell?

I'm looking at majoring in electrical engineering and investment banking afterwards.

Looking at the average starting salary of EE majors at about $55,000 a year, it seems like it just wouldn't be worth $50,000 in loans when I'd also have to run a car payment, rent, insurance, etc.

Can anybody with experience offer me a little advice? I'm more than willing to take out the loans if my investment will pay off.

For the record, my other option is Michigan. I was also admitted to Northwestern, but I'm not really considering that any more because if I'm going to spend that kind of money I think I'd rather be at Cornell.

That is a lot of loan. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it, I don't personally know anything about Michigan so I really can't help you there.

Just wondering, is that starting salery for EE majors in general or Cornell EE majors? I'm not sure if the salary is significantly higher coming from a great engineering school.

Also, the other advantage I see is there are special programs here were you can get your M.Eng with an aditional year. If you're planning on earning a masters degree this could save you money, because there is very little financial aid available for graduate students pursuing a masters degree (Lots of aid for pHd students though.) I believe the program usually takes 2 years, So it would save you $40,000 in that regard, if you want a masters degree.

Other schools might have comparable programs though.

Im a senior at cornell and my final three choices were cornell, michigan, and northwestern. Next year I will be investment banking at a top BB in new york as will many of my friends. To be honest, you cannot put a price tag on an ivy league degree. Michigan is an excellent school - my sister goes there and so is Northwestern, but neither one of those schools will ever open eyes for you as they do when you say you go to an ivy. If you take out those loans and you become an ibanker - you will make it all back in a year no problem. I say go with Cornell - most people you meet will choose Cornell over Michigan. Ibanks love engineers as well.
