rate SUNY campuses and their towns

Stony Brook is good if you live on Long Island and Queens because the travel is only about an hour by car so you can easily come home on weekends and stuff. Plus, theres a 'normal' climate.

Biggyboy - Providing the program is not filled, I would suspect that you would have a very good shot at their honors program. My similar stats got me honors recognition everywhere I have looked so far - including two other SUNYs.

Actually have a choice of either Cortland or Stony Brook as far as the Suny's go. I am very confused because I liked the Campus, and the feel of the smaller university with Cortland. Although I feel Stony Brook has the better reputation and is closer to Brooklyn where I live. After visiting Stony Brook I felt ther climate in the student's' behavior was rigid, not a relaxing bunch at all. The facilities and atmosphere were yes like a comuter College during the day I visited.

On the other hand I found Cortland more organized, and smaller classes were mentioned and also a happy bunch of students. I originally wanted to go to Cortland to play division 3 football and take Physical education. With my 3.6 GPA and 1200 Sat I now feel I should challenge myself with a Medical Technology Course, or maybe environmental Biology.

My first priority is education, but I feel I want to enjoy the college experience. Princeton review rates Cortland 77 in academics, Stonybrook 73. Stony Brook has the reputation, but only the Sciences seem to be bragged about, and the students rate the social lfe a 62. very low compared to Cortland 83. The base this on the overall happiness of students and other factors. I felt if was rigid, thats how I feel my camos visit presented itself. ANY Comments on Stony Vs Cortland Greatly appreciated. Running out of time

If you're a liberal...you will like New Paltz...the education isn't bad at all either. It's the second best College in the SUNY System (behind Geneseo of course)

I would think that Geneseo would be the best academic experience of all the SUNY schools. A main reason that the SUNY system is so weak compared to other state school systems in the relative newness of the system < 50 years. The regents program used to compensate for this by making it financially advantageous for NY residents to attend all the great private schools (Columbia, Cornell, Colgate, Hamilton, Vassar, Rochester, RPI, Union) in NY. Now that the regents has diminished, the rest of the system has caught up yet.

I go to UB over the others for many reasons. Mainly they are just better. You can see below. UB also gets the most money in the suny system, which is easy to prove just search for it. UB is also the best research University with the most federal funding, over all other sunys. In general I have noticed that alot of people in Engineering and other harder majors, consider Binghamton and Stony Brook to be horrible. I have many friends who have transfered to UB from these school, all very impressed with UB.

It is also in the Plans to make UB one of the top Schools in the nation by the year 2020. http://www.buffalo.edu/ub2020/
This means alot more money and we can already see it at UB. Things just keep getting better.

Also george pataki and others would like to change the name of UB from the University at Buffalo back to the University of Buffalo, and disassociate it with the Suny system. Such as making it the actual Public University of NY.

Again we can see that UB wins.

If buffalo is so great, then why do some of the better students go to binghamton?!? I could pimp my school all I want, but we both know the SUNY system is heavily lacking in most areas. No point in sugar coating it.

Most money doesnt always equal better.

In my kids Long Island HS, a lot of top kids do go to Buffalo and Albany over Bing. They too would rather be in a more urban environment than Bing or Geneseeo has to offer.
And if Del 888 is still around, I wanted to tell him that Cortland has a nice 5 yr. combo program with Duke U in environmental science. You can get spend 3 years at Cortland and then the last 2 at Duke to get a masters in environmental science/forestry. Cortland also has a combined 2/2 BA program with SUNY environmental program at Syracuse. My d will be going to Cortland for Sports Management. There are some hidden gem programs within the Suny system- but sometimes they are hard to find.

if you say so AFireInside530'

I just know to many students who went to Binghamton and hated it and came to UB, especially in Engineering. and actually yes more money does equal better, look at top universities and look at there endowment and total money, they are alot higher than than other not so good schools.

"The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF)was rated slightly AHEAD of Stony Brook in the latest UNS&WR. I am surprised no one has mentioned it earlier! It has the size of a LAC but also has PhD programs in all departments.
SUNY-ESF is located in Syracuse (right next to Syracuse University), so there is a decrnt-sized city but plenty of rural/recreational areas close by."

We visited ESF and hated the campus. There are only a handful of unimpressive buildings. Also, it sells itself as being a partner with Syracuse U, but the fact is that ESF students are looked down on and seen as being inferior. There's no real campus to speak of, and community spirit isn't great.
