Rate the EC's Above You

I am well aware of the success of the Rate the Schedule Above You thread, but there never seemed to be a place for EC's to be rated. I believe now is a good time [better than never] to establish such a thread:

GUIDELINES:

-Explain your every thought

-Say how to improve

-Always rate another's EC's before you post your own

-Be kind and courteous [Rude behavior=No respect and help]

And with that, let the rating begin!

RANKING SYSTEM

-Look for amount of time put in

-Look for commitment

-Look for leadership roles

Lowest score will be a 1
Highest score will be a 10

Intern for 2 yrs at a Piano place (ill be teaching there in the fall)
Student Council Secretary(10th), VP(11th)
Key Club Fundraiser Chairperson (11th and 10th), Service Project Chairperson (9th)
NHS (11th)
Band, marching season: synthesizer, concert season: 2nd chair concert saxophone
30+ hours over 1 yr at nursing home

-Earth and Science Club (Camping and volunteering club) 3 years, about to be Historian my senior year
-National Honor Society; 1 year; going for officer for next year
-Academic Decathlon; 1 year; this year I was a back up, next year probably a starter
-Tennis; 3 years; no varsity Q_Q
@paints looks really good, 10!

I would give that a 3. You do stuff, but I don’t see any passion, really, and your only officer position yet is Historian. Being an NHS officer will definitely help, and at least you have something you’ve done all of high school. I would focus on that, because that’s what you’ve spent the most time doing. Don’t try to show off what you’ve done for only a year. If you like Science and academia find other ways to show that. I’m not sure what options you have or the resources available to you, but that is the best advice I can give.

Theatre:
-ACTING-I have had many type of roles in school and community theatre productions: Ensemble, featured, minor, and major. I am only a rising junior, and I am near the top of my drama department, so I do have potential to get the lead in a few plays within the next two years
-TECH-I also have a good amount of tech experience stage management being the biggest. I have experience in lights/sound, run crew, set construction, and am set to co-direct a one act next year.
-ITS-International Thespian Society. (Honor Society for theatre) 6-star. By senior year, I will have 12-stars, which is equivalent to 1200+ hours in theatre and gives the title of National Honor Thespian.
-OFFICER- I am an executive officer of our ITS troupe and drama club this year. Next year, I am going to be Vice President.
-FORENSICS (PUBLIC SPEAKING)-Public speaking group. Competes under VHSL. 2013 District Champion in Humorous Duo Interp. And Regional finalist.

Technology Student Association:
-CHAPTER OFFICER- I am not officially a chapter officer, but I do attend officer meetings, and hold the same authority as an officer.
-REGIONAL SECRETARY- This year I served as secretary for our region (consists of 20-30 high schools and middle schools). I was reelected to a second term for next year. As officer, I help plan all of our events within the region. My senior year, I plan on running for president and serving on the state council.
-AWARDS-TSA holds annual competitions. I have won 3 and placed in 6 other events at the regional level. At the state level, I have placed in 2 and finalized in 8.

Model General Assembly
-Served as patron for this years bill at the 2013 Virginia MGA. Will serve next year as Vice President.

National Honor Society
Doubt if this really matters but I write stories/novels. I have written one full length novel. I consider it one of my passions.

Pretty awesome! I say a 10 because you clearly show your passion and you do a lot in what you do rather than doing only a little in everything.

Theater:
-Costumes for school plays (9th and 10th grade) 6 shows

Jewish Youth Group:
Regional General Board (11th Grade, (probably) 12th grade also)

Special Affairs Coordinator on SGA as a Freshman only though

NHS (12th grade)

I will have an (undecided) job the summer before Senior year and possibly throughout the year also

I’ll give you an 9 because you really seem to have your interests in Theater as well as journalism. The managing experience is good too. I could see you having a compellng story to tell.

I’ll keep my list short:
Online EIC of award winning yearbook and website
Finance/Media director of world championship winning robotics team

9!
Your ECs show a lot of focus and passion. And your theatre stuff is pretty unique too. Maybe if you want to improve you can throw in some volunteering or something, but I think the job would suffice.

Awks, someone posted before me. Anyway, I’ll keep in my comments, and just add to them.
@MutaRiSC: 6/7
Although you don’t have a plethora of ECs, you have clearly dedicated a lot of time in them. Like world championship winning! That’s great! I’m not really to sure what EIC is, so I wasn’t really able to judge too well. Maybe try adding some community service or something? I don’t know, my main issue is not knowing what an EIC is (sorry, I guess I’m just really out of it)

Also, summer programs at top Canadian universities after 9th grade and 10th grade.

10

Keep in mind I am onky a sophomore

Clubs:

Leadership:

Forensics VP of fundraising: 10
Forenscis President: 11
Model UN board: 11

Internship:
Neuroscience research at my state flagship for the next two summers.

9 because there’s nothing tying them all together. Still, very impressive.

Junior Year Extracurriculars:
-Doing research this summer under a professor at UT
-Helped organize a 20 school wide TEDx event
-Part of school’s tech crew and participated in school musical this year
-Founder of the Math Club and Math Help Center at my school
-Varsity Cross Country, Track, and Soccer
-Co-captain of Science Team
-Founder of Pokemon Club: Moderator of a 2000 member Pokemon site
-Community Service: Built water way for a community in Nepal, raised money for a school in Africa, volunteer work at soup kitchen

I’d probably give you an 8. It’s very, very solid, but I don’t really see anything tying it together. That being said, I’m still impressed. Great work!

Sophomore

Youth Court. I’m the Assistant Chief Judge, a member of their Board of Directors and Ethics Board. I’ve also racked up over 300 hours of community service. (9, 10)

Partners Club. Basically, we work with the special education kids at my school and hold club meetings with regular kids. The whole point is to get the two groups to interact and create friendships. I’m a co-president. (9, 10)

Debate. I got third at the state tournament for LD (really not sure how that happened, actually). It’s something I enjoy tons and spend a ton of time on. (10)

JV Tennis. I’m not very good, but I have fun with it. (10)

National Honor Society. I was just inducted about two weeks ago. (10)

9 because you are a sophomore but have already involved yourself in good activities. Plenty of community service helps too.

I’ll clarify:
Online Editor in Chief of award winning yearbook and website
Finance/Media director of world championship winning robotics team
Staff writer for school political review magazine

Junior

That is short. You’re being a bit vague, and I’m not sure how you’ve contributed to your ECs much (I’m sure you have), so I’ll have to give you a 6.

Anyways…

Okay, I have essentially no actual ECs at all. And it’s Junior year. I’ve recently become extremely interested in producing music though. I’ve been playing violin for a long time of course, and this year I took AP Music Theory. I’m going to try to talk the teacher into letting me do Music Independent Study next year, and I’m currently looking out for legit music production programs during the summer (they had a really good one at UCI but they POSTPONED it gg). I also ran for the school sound production student board position but lost to a guy whose brother held the position the previous three years.

Think I can spin this into a somewhat convincing EC? I’m hoping they’ll see that I’m going beyond the typical asian “play violin because your parents made you” and that I’m passionate about this. And I really am. I’m hoping to start some sort of one man video game company one day, like that Touhou guy, and do art, music, programming, story, everything.

Anyways this is a EC rating thread, right? Hold your breath:
-Placed in regional science olympiad. Our team fails and every other school in the district made it to state except us, but I did the best on the team, which isn’t saying much.
-Planning on working a hundred hours at a tree nursery during the summer. Have about 10 hours so far, and I think that this could work, given my Forestry event for science olympiad.
-Going to edit a history book project for my APUSH class. I’ve seen the previous few year’s attempts, and they were excellent. Had a site and everything.
-Text game programming. It’s really simply JSON stuff, but in working with it I’ve gotten a real feel for the balance between strategy and flavor.
-Trying desperately to get an internship/someone to sponsor my music work during the summer. Like I said I originally was going to do a program at UCI but they bloody postponed it.
-Gonna go on a global tour with a orchestra during the summer for a week.
-Found a club (president, although that’s probably meaningless), and although we had no direction at first, I found a PSA contest and wrote, directed, and edited the whole thing. Needless to say we didn’t win, and the club cost us several hundred dollars somehow, but I learned a lot about organization.
-Music production, of course. I haven’t really started yet (a running theme) with APs and all, but I remember being obsessed with Garageband way back when and I still have a track that I made with loops on a friend’s computer the summer before 8th grade. Now since I actually know how music works, yeah.

Junior. Sigh. I’m late, I know, but I really didn’t discover my interests until this late in my high school career. I also had a few awesome things planned out (see above) that unfortunately didn’t work out as I hoped. Assuming everything else does, how do you think my ECs will fair at the admissions cutting table?

@basicspace, youre hard to give a grade to, because so much of your application is theoretical and we dont know how far you may go in your music production (i.e could be minor, could become fantastic EC), so for now i would give you a 5/6, your EC’s are not held together by any noticeable passion for now, although hopefully music will change that! Good luck!

As for me:
Im a sophomore but I will put things as they will be junior year (leadership is decided)

Vice President of Model UN, with some circuit awards (9,10,11,12)
Congress Debate Regional Champion, headed to Nationals (9,10,11,12)
Staff Writer for School Newspaper (9,10,11,12)
Three term (and hopefully four!) elected member of academic honor board (9,10,11,12)
Squash Team (9,10,11,12)
Varsity Cross Country (11,12)
Self-teaching Arabic
Student Democrats Club Officer (9,10,11,12*)
Thanks!

9/10

Everything is good, but it would have been nice to have seen one where you were President or at that level because some colleges might think of you as ‘scavenging’ [Rather than run for a competitive role, you run for a lower role], not to say your accolades aren’t impressive.

I’d work on:

+Getting Squash Captaincy
+Getting MUN Presidency
+Getting some higher awards [Not to say they currently aren’t good] in MUN
+Develop the Arabic thing [I.E: "I organized an Arabic tutoring service, in which I made my own website, managed 3 other tutors that worked with me, designed lesson plans, etc. This makes you a unique person if you can make Arabic a big part of your life. For some reason, Ivies love ‘linguists’

bump
10char

Why bump this.

Bump, because I honestly think that CC’ers should have a resource to let them develop their EC’s to the point where they can truly match their other superhuman achievements ;)

EC’s:
Most active member on HSL.

WILL THIS GET ME INTO HAWVUHD?

^I actually have a really low post count according to boardreader, at least most of the time.

However, I have only seen the stats once since another HSL’er posted them, otherwise I have no idea how to check the stats
