Go ahead and rate them or tier them if you like

Ex. 1) Berkeley, Virginia, Michigan, 2) UCLA, Wisconsin, Illinois

I'm all for IU Bloomington, myself. But I come from Cali so I guess I have to support UC Berkeley, LA, and San Diego

I'd stick UNC-CH and W&M in your second tier there.

UT Austin :-)
Which IS considered a 1st tier school
I love my longhorns...

i like Texas but id place it with the rest of the 2nd tiers. Its not any better than LA.

what about Florida?

Right, UT-Austin, knew there was another school I wanted to add to the second tier.

UF would be one more level down IMO.

Best overall public universities are considered Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, UVA, Wisconsin, UNC Chapel Hill maybe just maybe USC.

After these comes schools like University of Maryland, UT maybe Penn State, UMass Amhearst (although this may not be as strong overall as the others noted here), UWashington, Ga Tech

Also, I noted overall universities. There are many small universities that don't get as well known but are very good such as William and Mary, Virginia Tech, St Marys in Maryland, Truman State etc.

Here's the US News rankings of publics if anyone is interested:

UCB, Michigan, UCLA, Wisconsin, UVa, UNC, UCSD, Texas, Illinois.

Too bad Berkeley absolutely sucks with out-of-state financial aid. Ungh.

tax guy, USC is a private school.

UCB, Michigan, UCLA, Wisconsin, UVa, UNC, UCSD, Texas, Illinois.

*I am in complete agreement with barrons

UCB, Michigan, UNC, UVA, UCLA, UCSD, Wisconsin

UNC and UVA are the ones I liked a lot, lots of fun and great academics.

don't know a whole lot about the rest

Oops. except I would also add William and Mary

UCSD for the sciences.

Gradstudent,Whoops, you are right. However, the rest of my list seems right on except William and Mary should be further up.

I think UT Austin is first tier for what I want to do. I HOPE to apply/and get in to their top 15 law school. It might be a long shot though. However, UT is both cheap (for instaters) and the faculty is outstanding.

UT is underrated.

University of Nevada, Reno.....just kidding

Although it is much better than its rival down south, UNLV

The Killers met at UNLV . . .

i wonder why Florida is so hard to get into. It seems even in-state you need 1300+ to get in. I believe USNews tied it with Tulane in terms of selectivity...way above other publics except Berkeley Virginia Michigan Wisconsin Illinois (i might have forgotten another, perhaps Washington).

and another thing...i was reading somewhere that the UC skills get bogus rankings on the USnews. That is, their ranks are way too high because of certain factors that I do not remember at present. Anyone care to elaborate?
