The best schools in Florida: How does the ranking go.
Here are the schools of note:
- FSU
- UF
- UM
- UCF
-USF
-FIU
-FAU
-NOVA
- FGCU
-UNF
- Florida tech
-UTampa
-Fl A&M

1.) UF
2.) UMiami
3.) FSU
4.) USF
5.) UCF

Then they're all about the same.

I would also point out that New College of Florida should likely be somewhere near the top, even though you did not list it. It is, of course, vastly smaller than most on your list, and has a somewhat unconventional...stance, on many things. However, it is definitely good.
I think GatorEng has it about right, though I might switch UCF and USF, but it's hard to say. Both have reputations that I think are currently evolving, as opposed to the first three which I feel are fairly cemented as the state's top schools, though some would argue for a different order, especially within certain majors.
I don't know if I would say the others are "all about the same", but they are a notch, in general, below the ones mentioned.
And then, of course, FAMU has the distinction of being an HBCU, which makes it somewhat harder to compare directly to the others.

Rollins should also be on the list...but it's a small LAC-type school which can't really be compared with UF/FSU/U Miami. It is rated the number 1 "Masters University" in the south by US News and has some solid progams.

I'm from Florida, but got out of there for college. I didn't like any of the schools.

We've discussed this many times and the answer is always the same:

What do you want to study?

Some schools, especially FSU and UF, have areas of emphasis in which they are really good.

So you decided to go to Florida's bitter rival instead? You're a rebel.

I mean, I'm not going to an instate school next year, and I would have been hard pressed to do so, but that didn't preclude me from weighing in on the question that was asked. Florida schools are not for everyone, but they are certainly for plenty of people, so if they want to know which are the best...

I agree, I was just joking around.

UF, FSU, UCF and not even UM really

are the only ones on my school's (panhandle) radar...

i don't want to go instate :/

I'm not an original Floridian, so I never had ties to any of the schools down there. My choosing to go to UT had nothing to do with being a rebel and everything to do with it having what I wanted in a University.

1) UF
2) UM (but expensive as hell)
3) FSU
4) USF
5) FIU
6) UCF
and the rest sort of don't vary much in quality of education (although Nova is super-expensive)

(GatorEng, I was actually responding to klf1120, your posts were fine...I wouldn't want a fellow Gator--ok, ok, I'm not a student, but my grandfather and mother were, and my ability to remain loyal to the Gators was a part of my choosing a Div 3 school to attend--to think I was snapping at them.)

UF
FSU
UM
UCF
FAU
USF
UTampa
FIU

Here we go again. As parent2noles has noted, it depends on how you look at it.

UF and FSU have been around the longest... over 100 years.

Therefore, they have the most alumni to donate money back to the school. Furthermore, they get the most money from the Florida Legislature, so they get the most professors, so they get the most research money, so they get the most facilities and the highest rankings. It's all about money. Money money money.

UF has an endowment of 996+ million dollars. FSU has $500 million. FAU's is $168 million.

Not surprisingly whatsoever, rankings usually read as UF > FSU > FAU.

So does that mean that the best college for everybody is UF? It may seem that way, but then you start looking at the other factors, even down to something so seemingly-inconsequential as, "Is this college campus too big for me?" If you like small college campuses, UF is never going to be the best school for you.

If people wanted a fair answer, they'd really break this down into strata based on age; schools 100+ years old in one category, schools 50-99 years old in another and finally, schools <50 years old in another. That way the comparisons are more valid.

I think everyone would agree that UF is the best florida school with athletics and academics :D

It's all about the U!

Miami is the best.

You're on some good ish if you think Miami is the best in Florida...

Well lets just say its not too long till it becomes the best!
The average stats at UM for entering freshman are already higher, they admit a lower percentage of applicants than UF and their endowment has already reached 1.5 Billion as of December 2006 Making it the highest in Florida.
Also in US News, Miami is only trailing by 7 spots so it wont be too logn till it reaches or beats UF.
