How do you think these E.C.s are for top colleges that are not HYPSM, such as Cornell and Duke?
4 Years Cross Country, Captain
3 Years Indoor Track
3 Years Outdoor Track
4 Years Marching Band, Section Leader
2 Years NHS
4 Years Maryland Math League
4 Years Concert Band
2 Years Academic Team
I don’t espect these E.C.s to carry me, I just want to make sure they won’t hurt me in the application process. I have also won some running awards for 5Ks, but nothing spectacular. I have however won numerous awards for miniature(model) painting. Any help/ comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

They won't hurt you, but they are also not likely to cause you to stand out in the admissions pool either. You might want to play up the miniature painting angle as that is not a typical hobby for jocks.

You should list them in order of importance to you, not what you think will look most impressive. They'll see through that. My guess is, if that's how you naturally wrote them out, that's the order they have when it comes to importance to you.

I don't know...how many people write about marching band in their essays to Duke? It might be a hook if you've got a brilliant philosophical spin on it :)

Well, running and band are the most important activities for me. Will listing running first hurt me? Also, should I list my painting awards and running awards in the award section?

i personally think they're very good, you've shown dedication to at least EC and you're very well-rounded - Sports, Music, Academics-. Personally, I would suggest adding detail to your favorite/most important EC's and "giving them life" -___-;;...

If running is most important, list it first. No, it won't hurt you. :) Yes, list your awards! Congrats on getting them. Having painting awards shows you're very well-rounded.

I'm not docking marching band, I've been in it for the past three years. I just think it's one of those overly written upon subjects because so many people per school make up the group and it takes such a significant part of a persons high school life. I guess if you were a really good writer, wrote a really original essay, and gave some really deep philosophical underpinning ideas to it, marching band would be ok. Write about what you love I guess. That way it'll be easy to put passion into it.
