Alright here's another game to pass the time. We all know that Yale rates all sections of your application from one to nine. With nine being the best... So let us rate all parts of our application, and we'll see what the total adds up to. I'll try to come up with categories. Keep in mind that... at least according to the ASC site, most of the applicants at Yale are clustered around a seven and five. A nine is extremely rare.

1 = very bad aka you suck.
5 = positive but uncompelling
9 = amazing... 1 in a 1000.

Standardized Tests
Here I'd give myself an 7, I have about 3930/4000... but I could probably have taken more SAT IIs to look more impressive.

Grades in School
An 8. I do the IB which is challenging. I'm ranked in the top 1% of my class.

Essays
A 5. My topic was good, at least I think it was. But I don't my essays were well-written. Actually, I'll give myself a four on this category.

Recommendations
A seven. One teacher gave me all top few in my career. My gc said she one of the best letters she has ever written.

Extracurricular activities
Another five. Sports... state ranked team but not recruited. I'm good at math, but not as good as most people here... student council... volunteering ... I'm really involved within my school environment, in pretty much in all the clubs... and I have quite a few leadership positions. But I haven't done anything compelling.

Interview
A five. We were really dissimilar. He majored in history at Yale and I want to major in the sciences. But at least the conversation was not forced.

Grand total => 36 / 54 = 67%

Yeech... at least I didn't fail. So how do you guys rate your application. Try to be realistic with your ratings...

Stadandized tests
3---Pretty darn low compared to some people here (and at Yale). 1300--SAT II: 790, 630, 600. Maybe even a 2.

Essays
7 It is amusing (at least I think it is), and the people that I've showed it to said it was very good, and made me sound "human." Which is quite good, because I don't want to give them an impression that test scores/grades define who I am.

Recommendations
7-8...The one from my teachers were also very good, and I got all "top of my career" except one box. I wasn't really satisfied with my gc's rec (too generic), but what can I do...I also got a rec from the governor of my state (1 full page) which is a bonus (I think it will be, at least)

ECs
My strongest point. Maybe 8.5-9. So many leadership, clubs, etc, I think I'm well rounded, I have something to say about every subject (music, science, english, government, speech/debate, and community service.....) I started a community outreach program that has gotten quite big here.

Interview
No interview yet.

I was reading the posts from "Decision day 12/15/2003" yesterday. The funny thing was, all these 1580/800/800/800 got rejected---there were two girls who got accepted with a 1370 and 1350. Oh, and there were sooo many deferrals. Soo, maybe I will have a chance (if I get my SAT I up, I took it yesterday) but I seriously doubt it.

Standardized Tests
7 or 8. I end up with a 3880 out of 4000, which would make me give myself a 7, but I also got a 1600 SAT; although 939 people got this last year, only 325 were females, so hopefully that will help me. That's why I bumped myself up to an 8.

Grades in School
This could either be a 5 or 6. As anyone who's read the predictions thread would know, I had a terrible GPA my freshman year, a 3.2something. Tenth and eleventh grade GPAs brought my cum. GPA up to 3.8something, and I received a 5.0 (out of 4.0) first quarter of this year. So my GPA is pretty bad compared to most, but I think it's evident that I've been working my butt off since ninth grade.

Essays
One essay was about a 6, other was about a 7 or 8, so I'll give myself a 6.75 on this. Random, I know.

Recommendations
I didn't see any of mine, but one teacher recommendation will be about a 9, the other probably a 7 or higher. My guidance counselor is the GC for 250 kids, so I don't know how well he knows me, and I have no idea what his rec will look like. I'll say 8 with reservations.

ECs
Pretty solid, but nothing great. 6.

Interview
Awful. She seemed very disinterested and had found out earlier that day that she had a lunch meeting, so the interview was very rushed. She probably felt guilty about that and gave me a 5.

That ranges from 37.75 to 39.75. I'm probably overestimating the recs and essays, though, so maybe bump that down to a 35 or 36. Ew.

Standardized Tests
I'll give myself a 7. The only score I sent in was my score of 35 on the ACT, which is out of a possible 36. But there is a 1430 SAT I and a 760 SAT II Writing Score Haunting my transcript (albeit unofficially)

Grades in School
Another 7. My school only offers 3 APs- Government, Literature and Comp, and Studio Art. I took Government and Lit and Comp, but I didn't have enough credit for Studio Art. I also reached the highest levels in Spanish, Chemistry, and Math. However, I don't have a math class this year. I have a 3.98uw GPA, which puts me 8th in a class of 323.

Essays
A 5. My activity essay was about my experiences in Boy Scouts, and it was plenty good but probably unremarkable. My other essay was meant to show my creative side-it drew parallels between my school and its administration and Oceania and The Party in the book 1984. I think it may have made me look like a weirdo.

Reccomendations
7. They were very good but my teachers did not use Yale's papers. My counselor checked all "Top Few of My Career" except for reaction to setbacks, for which she had no basis of judgement. At least she'll be able to mark something after i get deferred/rejected. (Hopefully I don't throw something in her office.)

ECs
6. I am an Eagle Scout, President of NHS, school Secretary, and Governor of our mock government, though I suppose all applicants are. I play football and trumpet, but I'm nothing special by any stretch.

Interview
probably a 5. as with Davidrune, we hit it off really well and talked for a long time, but we had nothing in common. I want to do Ethics, Politics, and Economics, and he is a doctor who did Biology.

Total = 37/54

Sounds like I should have gotten your interviewer and you should have gotten mine, mw05.

Standardized Tests
A 4.
My SAT I score is not nearly as high as most people applying to Yale. It isn't horrible (1390) but it could be much better. My SAT II scores are 800, 780, 650. 2 that are great, one not so good.

Grades in School
A 7. I am in the top 5% of my class and have virtually all As.

Essays
A 7. Everyone who has read them has loved them, and that includes english teachers, professors, family, friends. I think they are well written, and interesting, but I don't want to over-rate them.

Recommendations
An 8. My recommendation letters are all glowing and well-documented.

Extracurricular activities
A 5. Impressive dedication/leadership roles, but nothing extraordinary.

Interview
A 7. The interview was so spectacular. We really connected.

= 38/50

Standardized Tests:
7
1550/800/800/780 - Decent but nothing out of the ordinary for Yale applicants

Grades in School:
8
Ranked 4th in a class of over 400 students so Top 1%. Will have 12 APs completed by graduation.

Essays:
2
My weakpoint. I could have done much better on these essays but I procrastinated and blew it. I should give myself a 1 but I'm being generous and giving myself another mercy point.

Recommendations:
5
I'm putting 5 because I really don't know. The teachers that wrote my recs know me pretty darn well but I really don't know what they wrote.

Extracurriculars:
6
Lots of clubs and a bit of leadership. Have won quite a bit of math/science state awards. My biggie here will probably be my NASA SHARP experience and working at Boeing Satellite Systems in Los Angeles

Interview:
5
Like a lot of people on here, I ended up with an interviewer who I didn't have much in common with background wise. Nevertheless, it went alright. We talked for about an hour or so and everything went pretty smoothly.

33/54

btw, it's out of 54. Athlon we have exactly the same SAT scores. 1550/800/800/780. In fact we took exactly the same SAT IIs and got exactly the same scores.

Cool, since when did you move to Toronto?!?!

The beginning of high school.

hmmm interesting....good way for me to procrastinate about my awful week coming up

standardized tests: 6
my scores are fine, and my top three are from varied categories (science, english, and language) I'm glad my Latin score is in my top three because I want to be a Classics major and so few people take the Latin SAT II that it'll (hopefully) stand out

Grades: 8
My grades are almost perfect, but the tiny imperfections bump this score down to an 8

Essays: One essay was great, one so-so....so I'll give myself an 6ish7

Recommendations: well....I didn't see them, but one teacher took a speech she wrote about me when she was presenting an award to me and made that into a rec, and that was pretty amazing....the other one was from my Latin teacher and apparently she writes good recs? I don't know, but she loves me and Latin's definitely my best subject....my GC loves me, and knows me really well and he's been doing this a long time so hopefully it was good....I'll give myself an 7

ECs: ok, so I'm incredibly dedicated to my newspaper. Beyond belief. and I was involved with another activity freshman year to the point of absurdity. Now, I'm just afraid that they're going to think I'm lying. Which would kill my chances. So this could be a 1 or an 8

interview: it was fine, nothing amazing...on-campus, not alumni though....prob a 6

41.5/54 (assuming they don't think I'm lying) = 77%....if only those were my chances sigh

standardized tests: 5 1440/760/750/750- this should hopefully go up after i get my dec. scores back (maybe a 4? i could be overestimating right now..)

grades: 9
perfect gpa in the hardest classes

essays: 9
i worked so damn hard on these to try to make up for my test scores. my ap lit teacher really liked them.

recommendations:
didn't see them... probably about a 7

ecs:
8
very involved in music- 2 orchestras, band, flute choir--flute, harp, piano.... other leadership positions and clubs as well

interview (on-campus- still haven't gotten alumni)- it was ok.. nowhere near as good as my dartmouth alumni interview though... probably a 6

44/54 (but this MUST be lower- i guess i'm just optimistic or you guys are way too pessimistic)

or realistic..... In ECs, 8s and 9s are usually reserved for athletes who went to the olympics or musicians who played in Carnegie Hall.

standardized tests: 5.5 1440/770/760/690
the 1440 is on the low end for Yale, but the 750 Verbal on the breakdown shows that im only 6 questions short of knowing my stuff. haha. the 760 in world history and the 770 writing show im strong where that is concerned, and as a poli sci major they are helpful. the 690 in both the sat i and the ic shows that i am above average (93 and 83 percentiles respectively) in the maths but by no means a superstar.

grades: 8
all As except two Bs in... gee surprise, algebra and pre-calculus. all honors classes (even music). im going to count my AP scores here, since they correspond with the classes, and 5s in Euro and English is impressive. my transcript contained note that i was the only 5 in Euro in the school and one of 3 5s in English of 73 kids who took the english. the 4 in art history is rather irrelavent

essays: 9
most of you read them already. i outdid myself.

recommendations: 8
my teachers and my GC wrote fabulous recs. i only saw one of them (teachers writes them with the student) but i saw how my college GC reacted when she read them .

ecs: 6.5
lost of musical involvement, im not sure how much the time committment of marching band counts, it severly limits my ability to do anything else for 4 months at 27 hours a week. nothing spectacular with ECs but more than anybody at my school. township and varsity sports starting at age 7 but no particularly incredible talent except at oboe.

interview: on campus 7 and alumni 9 so ill say 8
the on campus interview went extremely well and the alumni one was incredible. he told me if it were up to him id be in but as hes not on the admissions committee all he can do is write them and tell them thats how he feels.

45/54 = 83.3%... which, at a 16.5% admit rate is EXACTLY where i honestly think i belong... right on the cusp of acceptance on the edge of deferral.
i agree with harpingchic, you all are being to hard on yourselves.

Standardized tests: 7 (800 V, 650 M on SAT I, SAT II: 800 Fr, 780 Wr, 600 M)

grades: 6-7 3.97 uw gpa, swinging an A- in Calculus despite 600 on SAT Math IIC
As in college English classes
essays: supplemental 9, personal statement 7-8 (the supplement was a pretty articulate discussion of my greatest passion, music)

recommendations: one's going to be a 9, the other a 6 or 7

ecs: depending on whether or not they like my violin playing and composing and think that I was wise to spend all that time on it, either like a 6-7 or an 8...

interview: probably a 6-8-- no way is it below 6, it was a good interview, but a 9 seems highly highly unlikely, since I'm not all that socially adept.

you guys are too modest...
if you have a 3930/4000 david then you MUST give yourself a frigging 9!!! Again if you are in the 1% of your class you MUST give yourself a 9!!!

ok, let's see.

Standardized Tests - 5
I have one 800, two scores in the high 600s, and a 1450 sat I. eh.

Grades - 5
My unweighted GPA is a 3.655. I have taken all the top courses in the school, for the most part. I do reasonably well.

ECS - 9
I am recognized at the national level for science (working in a lab at yale on my own project with my own funding) and singing (have been invited to participate in a program run by affiliates of the Metropolitan opera and I study with a singer from the Met). additionally, i have lots of leadership, including editor in chief of the school paper for 2 years (i am the first to be that), chair of positions in the latin club and the national honor society, etc. and i spend a lot of time performing in shows. etc. etc. etc. and i've been recogized by everyone and their mother for the things i do.

Essays - 8
They were pretty damn good, but everything is subjective, at this point. i will say this: i want to be a creative writing major.

Recs - 8 or 9
I have a rec saying i'm great, but then again, which ones of you don't? also, though, i have a rec from a prof at yale saying i'm the most diligent, competent, brilliant, funny, thoughtful, and industrious person who has ever worked in his lab, including med students, grad students, and undergrads from yale.

Interview - 9
I had such a good interview! AAHHHH ! My interviewer was really awesome and we had a great conversation, so true that.

Other - my dad works at yale and has a high position there. +1.

5+5+9+8+8+9+1 = 45/54

not too shabby.
