Skybaker, did your letter say you were in the top 30 acceptees, who get all of their financial need met, or were they just really generous?

My D was accepted! Until last week, Hamilton was one of her top choices but we have learned that over 50% of the population is involved with Greek life. Somehow we missed this portion of the tour. That will be the deal breaker for her.

yermom-can you tell me where you got that 50% Greek life figure? I don't think that is correct, but I would like to know where it came from. 50% is an enormous amount of Greek life and I have never even heard such a high %, at other schools known for their Greeks! I am very suspicious about that #. I believe that Princeton Review shows Greeks at Hamilton in the teens % or 20 at the most(?). Thanks.

I don't think that 50% figure is quite right either. Granted my Fiske Guide is a year or two old, but it has 29% of men and 12% of women going Greek, and also says that frats are banned from the campus.

I think it is. A student was the first to tell me and I checked it on Princetonreview.com. You have to hunt a bit for it but it's there.

Me again. Just rechecked. Go on to Hamilton college on princetonreview.com, click stats, click extracurriculars. It's there...54%. My source tells me that the greek life is all the party scene and there's not much else. Utica is bleek.

It seems you have to be registered to get any information from that site. I believe you, yermom, that that's what you read, but the numbers are astonishingly different from the ones I've read. Since your daughter liked Hamilton so much otherwise, do you think it pays to contact the school directly and just ask them?

My daughter has friends at Hamilton and I can tell you it is not all Greek. The houses have been band, and there are only a few local sororities. I think I would check this out more before deciding not to attend if Greek is a deal breaker. The state universities aren't ever 50+% Greek.

OK--here is the definitive info on Greeks at Hamilton:

Below is a copy of exactly what is on the Hamilton princetonreview.com site. I read this as saying 34% of the males at Hamilton are in fraternities and 20% of the females are in sororities. There are approx 1800 students total. 49% are male and 51% female. Do the math and it shows approx 300 males in frats and approx 184 females in sororities, for a total Greek population of 484 out of approx 1800 students or approx 27%. That's a far cry from over 50%! This info is directly from princetonreview.com. I still believe the 27% figure could be a bit high, but I'd agree that about a quarter of the student body are in the Greek scene, meaning 75% are NOT!

Organizations

Fraternities: 7
Sororities: 3
Students in fraternities: 34%
Students in sororities: 20%

Thanks Daddo09, those figures are more like what I understand the Greek to be at Hamilton. There are a couple of other Hamilton Colleges, one in Cedar Rapids and one I believe in Omaha; maybe that is what yermom was thinking? Anyway, if yermom daughter doesn't want to attend Hamilton due to the Greek or non Greek numbers, I hope she checks out the other schools she is thinking about.

batdude, i think they were just really generous. i was definitely not one of the top 30 acceptees!

My FA package also meets my need and I am a poor international student. I think they are generous.

Hi Guys,
I am an international student and havent heard anything from them yet. Probably because of the long distance mail. My "My hamilton" is still the same. Can we call them and find out our decision?

I've been waitlisted........Its okay though coz ive been accepted at bard, and bard was always my top preference

good luck to all of you
