Va bene - First of all - wonderful to hear you are going to Cornell next year, good luck to you!!! and thanks for your input. As a matter of fact, my son has been in contact with a prof. at Hobart regarding the 3+2. He gave him the email of a HWS senior who is now at Dartmouth to contact. He sent out an email last night. The communication that we have had so far seems to be very positive, my son is leaning towards HWS. Do you know if the college is planning any new construction? Do you ever eat up at Comstock? (I hope this is the correct name) How is the food there?
Anyway, is anyone going to admitted student day?? (the 22nd or 29th)
Cheers...

jelomom - here is the webpage on HWS for clubs and such....

hope this helps.....

rubyred to answer your questions.

Comstock dinning is now closed because the new cafe that opened in South Hall, and that having the cafe in South and Comstock would be too many eating options for a student body of 2,000 (or at least that is what I was told). Currently, there is a new studio arts building that will be completed in October and they are renovating the other studio art buildings. Also, they are currently in the fundraising stages for a new performing arts building and to expand Scandling/turn it into more of a student union (think of the student union that SLU has-but not quite as expensive).

cz - do you know when the projected start and/or finish date (yr) is for the new and improved Scandling? SLU's union is amazing! I hope it is done before my son finishes there. that is if he chooses HWS. Would you say that there is something interesting to do every weekend? ...and to address a previous question...are there any dorm floors set up for quiet study? Thanks for your input....it is very much appreciated...

rubyred:

I don't know when they are going to start/finish it, considering they are still fundraising and those two projects will cost about $40 million. They are still trying to finalize the details for Scandling and the performing arts center. The problem with the performing arts center is that you have to specialize it for a certain "art" because they require different acoustics (I'm kinda of fuzzy on the whole thing..sorry!!) , and it will cost a lot of money, and also they have to finalize where to build it. I'm sure all of these details will be iron out with the upcoming board meeting. I would think they would start building sometime next year and have them completed by 2008-2009, but again, I'm not completely sure. CAB (the campus activities board) always brings a band or has a dance every weekend, so you'll always find something to do! For the quiet study floor, all I know is that all of the dorms have quiet hours.

when did people recieve the acceptance packets? my friend lives abroad and has been getting emails about an 'accepted students chat' but she hasn't recieved a letter yet...

expatella-

Read my post on the other thread. Something is strange!!!!!!!!!!!

Don Emmons (VP of Admissions) wrote me this morning and said that the acceptance letter which was overlooked, will be coming via mail in the next few days! We contacted him

But, the Finacial Aid Office wrote him about his Scholarship Awards weeks ago. In retrospect, that is the only way we knew he was in.

I believe that they relocated their Admissions office recently, could that be the excuse.

I got mine early because of the Arts scholarship. I guess it was around the end of February or so. I think everyone else received their letters towards the end of March. International students have a later application deadline, so perhaps they hear later?

Yes, D Emmons said that my son's letter was suppose to go out in Feb., but son's file clearly showed that they never sent one. He has no other explaination then an "oversight". Fortunately, other departments of HSW (Financial) were on top of their jobs and giving us enough information to start thinking about the school.

Maybe this isn't so uncommon. But, I hope that Expatella's friend will contact him and clear up her "oversight" too.

You don't think you're being a little harsh?

Harsh..............oh perhaps you could view it that way!

But when one is considering spending $43,000 for an education, some things seem reasonable to expect. Heck, we don't even know when decisions must be made for HWS (I am guessing May1), or have any acceptance papers to sign, or financial contracts to review.

Maybe this is just stuff parents worry about. Fortunately, this glitch should be cleared up in a few days and others may benefit by hearing about this and becoming proactive on their own behalf.

jelomom - you did not get the letter today? I really did think they would overnight it. I am surprised.

FYI for anyone interested - the online chat with HWS is April 19th 10PM to midnight EST.

Son received a very extensive email from the HWS student in the 3+2 Eng prog at Dartmouth. He is very happy with his time spent at HWS. Here are a few of his thoughts:

.......To me it seems like the point of this program is to allow you to get a liberal arts education as well as an engineering specific education. To some extent, I tried to take advantage of this while at Hobart by taking music classes, french classes, and american studies classes. So I guess the first thing I would have done differently would be to take some more classes outside of my major, both for well-roundedness and for my own sanity (all physics and math all the time can get boring!!)....

....The biggest thing I would change would be to have gone abroad while at Hobart. It's such a great experience and doing it through the school makes it like 0293842093 times easier than trying to do it after you graduate which is what Im struggling with right now. I would say that if the idea of going abroad seems remotely interesting to you, absolutely apply. It is definitely a once in a lifetime experience and something that you will probably never forget....

Thank you Scott.......

Sounds like the study abroad is the thing to do....

Well, our son is most likely going to send in the applic. $ to Hobart. On Thursday, I have to take son to meet a group in Geneva for the day and I will swing by campus to see what type of activity there is.

Jelomom - did your son have much contact with his regional admissions counselor?

Rubyred

jelomom - you have not even received your financial aid letter?????
Am I reading that right????
Son's acceptance letter came first then his financial aid pkg came later.
I am so sorry to hear of such a delay.

Rubyred-
The way we learned that he was accepted was from a legal sized envelope(the kind with a clear window for addresse's name to appear from within) from the Financial aid office informing him of his Faculty scholarship money. It was a one page note outilining the award. I remember thinking this was very odd compared to the packages we had received from other schools but thought that must be HSW method (thus my original posts to this forum). Later came a note from John Young with a small brochure of HSW and Finger Lakes. Hey, how much do they ask you to send for deposit and by when?

That's all we have heard from anyone! No local admissions counselor has been in contact with us. What we know about HSW is from this board and our own sleuthing. He did interview and tour campus back in the fall.

Wouldn't it be funny if we ran into each other in Geneva one day! The two parent detectives.

jelomom - I had this huge post and my internet connection went off!!! that roadrunner!!!!ARGH!! We are having quite a windy day here so a line probably went down.
Let me see if I can remember what I said>
The last date for admission acceptance is May 1 and the fee is $300. We have this reply card, kind of like a wedding reply and we have to check off to reserve a place or not. The address on the front of the postage paid envelope is:

* I was wondering if it might be worth getting a hold of your regional advisor to let them know about this situation and maybe they can oversee the mailings of the proper papers. My son has been in contact with Kara Primrose since junior year when she visited his school where they became acquaintances. She has stepped into another position at HWS but continues to answer all of my son's questions. She has been very helpful. I also have emailed her with many questions with quick responses. There was a time last fall when Kara thought my son should visit for a day but when I called the admissions office the secty put us off and told us we needed to have booked this earlier due to review days but when my son emailed Kara with this news a call with a full day of activities was setup for my son by the same secty with a full apology. It was a very good visit. So maybe the adcom can help a bit, but that is your son's call if he wants to get ahold of them.

Can any present students tell me what type of laptop they are using at HWS and if they purchased it thru HWS? Have you found your laptop to be useful for courses or just for casual use? Do you have your own printer? Son just got an email about purchasing a laptop thru HWS. www.HWS.edu/computer

I'm currently using a Gateway, but I'm pretty sure they go through IBM now. It's nice to have a warranty which pretty much covers anything you could do to a laptop, and on campus support staff. But if you can find a better deal on a laptop elsewhere (i.e. IBM's are ridiculously expensive) I would jump on that chance.

I have my own printer, and use it a lot, but I know many students who use the printers elsewhere. I know we have a limited amount of pages we can print at the library (but I'm pretty sure the number is fairly high), but there are other places to print on campus without those limits.

Is there a pool on campus for recreational swimming?

Yes, it's in the bristol gym.

I just dropped my son off at Trinity Church near HWS for some volunteer stuff and I went thru campus...what are all the rainbow ribbons on the trees?
