RD Acceptances

Just checked Pioneerweb and looks like I got waitlisted... heh... :-/

Does anyone know what are the chances off getting of the waitlist this year? I've heard that Grinnell over-enrolled last year and didn't even need the waitlist in the end.

Last year they waitlisted 900 people, 400 accepted a spot and 5 were accepted.

Year before that 250 accepted spot on waitlist and 16 were admitted

(all taken from commen data set)

so its not lookin so hot right now.

Waitlisted... Probably not staying on it though.

I GOT IN!!!! I GOT IN!!!!!!!! Finally an LAC that see me for who I am!!!! Ah yes I am sobbing right now...

Ah have to wait till the 30th for Fin Aid

son rejected
white male did not apply for FA
34 ACT
SAT 800M 650CR 510W(probably what killed him along with 3.2 GPA (UW) and D in English comp in Jr year)
can't recall exact SAT subject test scores but both were over 700 - MathII and Physics
excellent EC's - honors and awards in both academics and music & theater
and at least one excellent teacher rec (probably 2)

<shrug>
congrats to all of you who heard good news</shrug>

theorymom- Grinnell says that 50% of the decision is based on the HS performance- The 3.2 & D in English probably did cause deny. Only 25% of the decision is based on SAT/ACT. Plus almost 4000 applications for 385 spots- VERY COMPETITIVE YEAR.

They only had a 100 or so more apps then last year

They actually had 88 less apps from what the thread on admission data reported. But the acceptance rate fell 9% which is quite significant.

well an article i read in the nytimes said that grinnell was taking 10% more applicants this year, so idk what happened: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/08/education/08yield.html?em%5B/url%5D">http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/08/education/08yield.html?em</a></p>

Re-read the NYTimes article. The quote does not come from anyone at Grinnell.

Out of curiosity, you guys who are getting merit aid, are you not eligible for need based aid? Just wondering if they tend to just give merit OR need based.

According to the Common Data Set, of this year's first year class (464 students), 388 applied for need-based aid. 318 got need-based aid and 48 of these students also got merit aid. Of those not receiving need-based aid, 93 received merit aid.

I believe there is information on Grinnell's website about how it works when you get both need-based aid and merit aid.

i only got merit aid (and only a small amount). although i applied for need based aid i didn't end up qualifying for it.

Thanks Dairy State K8! I didn't see that on the site, I'll go and have another look.

I got both merit aid and need based aid, but I had a pretty low EFC.

I only got merit aid (only 7.5k a year) so I am hoping they will give me some financial aid b/c otherwise it will be pretty tough to come up with the money

I've been accepted. My FA award was along the lines of 45,500 or something like that and I received Merit and Need Based Aid. I recieve very good FA from everywhere I got in though so idk

Is the financial aid received with the admissions package the final award?

Check what it says on the letter. It should either say "Preliminary Award" or "Final Award" - if it's final, it's final, and you're supposed to send in a letter saying you accept that award if you decide to go. If it's Preliminary, that means you still need to submit some forms, which you need to do by May 1, and then they'll send you a final award letter.
