RD Applicants news!

I don't think the "where else are you applying" thing was required. I left it blank on the common app online and no questions were asked, I was accepted RD for Information Technology.

When looking at who was accepted and rejected, realize that RPI changed their process this year. In the past, the RPI medalist could apply Early Action, no commitment, and get acceptances in December. They had one round of ED in past years. Apparently due to over acceptances, they changed it this year. RPI medalists could not do EA. There were two rounds of ED, one in November, one in January (guess if you got rejected by MIT, Cornell etc ED and RPI was #2 choice). There's a good chance they filled up much of their class with the ED rounds.

I hope they publish their #s soon.

Our son will be class of 2012 and we're looking forward to it.

Waitlisted. 97.4 UW, 2230 SAT. Yay, go me!

Don't be mistaken by the sarcasm... I find this quite upsetting.

89 UW, all honors and AP classes

1350/1980 SAT

Edit: Waitlisted

Admitted with $16,000 in scholarships and about $9k in subsidized loans.

3.7/3.8(Don't really know) unweighted GPA
36 ACT
Bunch of honors and APs

After all the emails the sent me, I really expected some more money in scholarships. I'm kinda disappointed. I guess I can cross RPI off of my list.

Pretty much the same here; I got the RPI Medal for 15k but nothing else.. I really was hoping for quite a bit more... :(

I'm sure some of you have already seen this article, but it helps explain why application numbers are increasing and acceptance rates dropping.RPI: News & Events - At Rensselaer, Freshman Applications Jump 100 Percent in Three Years

The University has been on a quest called "The Rensselaer Plan" for about a decade now to improve its national and international standing.

The EMPAC is opening next fall, which is going to be HUGE. Its going to be one of the most acoustically perfect concert halls in the world. It also will have a ton of facilities for artists and researchers in virtual reality and technology based arts. They will be doing a huge landscaping job over the summer, and they recently bought a bunch of old apartment buildings in Troy across from EMPAC which they will be tearing down or renovating. Plus, the first part of the new 140 million dollar East Campus Athletic Village will be opening.

And they are already planning on a major ~75 million expansion of the science center a few years down the road. Sorry to be so long winded, but it really is an exciting time to be going to RPI.

applications just might be increasing because RPI sends out THOUSANDS of MULTIPLE emails to students recruiting them and thus leading the students to believe that they will be accepted and receive aid. Then, the school does not really come through. I just wonder how many priority applications the school sent out. I liked the school, but I am quite unhappy about their admissions policies.

MomEl: Rensselaer is not the only school that sends out emails trying to encourage students to apply. College admissions is a big business and colleges target students that thye might have an interest in their school. The more applications they receive, the more selective the school becomes. I would be very surprised if RPI was the only school that inundated your son with emails. There are a couple of schools that are still sending these "love" letters to my son who is a junior in college. My daughter who was a high scorer on the AMC exams received weekly emails from most of the techie schools during her junior and senior years (although ironically not RPI, which was her first choice school). From what I read, RPI received about 700 applications ED, so they may have filled 1/3 to 1/2 of their class with ED applicants alone. Also, there are certain areas that the school is trying to build - the ratio of females to males for one and they are trying to grow the Schools of Humanities and Science. So if your son was applying as a prospective engineering major, that may have hurt his chances for acceptance. My daughter is a freshman there and absolutely loves the school and as a parent, I have been very impressed with them.

If your son is truly interested in the attending the school, he should send a letter to the Admissions with additional information - any awards, scholarships, interests - to make his case and let them know that he is very interested in attending. Schools have a real tough time anticipating enrollment these days with students applying to 6 - 10 schools. In fact, RPI has had a real problem the past two years with more freshman accepting admittance than expected, so perhaps (and this is merely a guess on my part) this year they are waitlisting more people than normal to weed out those who only applied as a safety from those who really were interested.

There are so many qualified applicants and schools are trying to build a community. Things like GPA's and SAT scores are only a part of the equation. Many schools survey those accepted to see where they enrolled and why they declined admission. I would assume they use this information in subsequent years to see which students are likely to enroll if accepted.

Good luck. It is a very frustrating time for students and it is often unclear why one student was chosen over another.

Has anyone not received an official decision letter yet? I haven't gotten mine yet and I was just wondering

Thanks!

DD hasn't gotten hers yet, and we don't live that far from Troy!

S2 got his Admitted packet today (TN).

visited campus in October.

35 ACT, about a dozen AP courses by end of this year (Bio/Chem/Physics, etc.) with all 4 or 5 scores to date, Multivariable and Diffy Q this year, sr class prez, state sci olympiad multiple medals every year, xcountry/track, 3.9+ unweighted, 4.3 or so weighted on the particular HS scale (somewhere in the top 4 in his class we think).

Unfortunately, won't be doing RPI; most interested in biomedical, and Case Western's scholarship offer was quite a bit higher per year (26 v. 16). Thus, if he chooses a focused "engineering" school over the generalist schools with good engineering programs, it will be Case.

Good luck to all on the wait list, and congrats to those who got in.

Has anyone heard approximately how many applicants were placed on the wait list this year?

So the associate director of admissions called me today.....
I GOT IN!!!!

Can you say ecstatic!

Congratulation genius76, but a question for you. Why did you get a personal phone call? Were you initially accepted or on the waitlist, which would mean they are already "tapping" that which seems too early to me.

My s has not received his letter stating he is on the wait list nor the reply card to say that he wants to stay on the wait list. We only know he is on the wait list from his RPI log in. Has anyone else received that letter/reply card yet? Wondering is his is lost in the mail.

I got in! Wasn't even expecting the letter today either. Good luck everyone!
Computer Science woo!

BSJT....best I can figure is I was initially accepted to RPI but they need my transcripts to kind of confirm "good standings" after the first semester! The guy he called was the Director of Multicultural Recruitment Program???

I am not accepting a spot on the waitlist, but their return envelope isn't prepaid (i need to put a stamp on it)...can I just fax it to them cause I dont want to waste money to tell them I'm not going to be on the waitlist...

did any RD's get the actual letter in the mail at all? i checked my status online and thats how i know but i'm still waiting for the actual acceptance package in the mail.
