RD Application Questions

sooo... i know there's probably another thread out there like this but i thought i'd make one anyway. i just got rejected from an ED school and nyu was my close second so i've got to get to work on the application. does anyone (current students/ed acceptees/anyone else) have advice on the sorts of things they look for and how to make the application stand out? i know these questions are general but i'd really appreciate any help. thank you and congratulations to everyone that's already been accepted.

which school / division are you applying to?

well, i was planning to apply to steinhardt, but after a meeting with my GC yesterday, he said maybe i should apply to CAS instead.

I'm no expert, but here's my best advice:

Make the application a true reflection of you. At least in my opinion, the separate parts of the application are not really separate. Each of them is there to present a piece of your personal pie, so you should use them that way.

If there are things you need to bring to the attention of the admissions committee - i.e. death or serious illness in the family, etc. - that explains some inconsistency, make sure that you do so. Doing so may very well help you alot.

The best way to make the application stand out is to make yourself stand out. Write the essay that no one else is willing to write. Believe it or not, you can affect what kinds of recommendation letters you get. If there is something specific you would like your teacher or counselor to highlight, ask them to talk about it in the letter. Make Steinhardt (or CAS) see why you belong there and not in Gallatin or Tisch or Fordham or Barnard or Columbia or any other college or university.

It's been said before, but NYU sees hundreds of applications per day - they need to reject people because you can't all fit. Don't give them a reason to do so. The question here is "why should they admit you over the person with the same stats and EC's?" When you can answer that, that's when you will produce your best application.

Why are you applying to CAS rather than Steinhardt? Are you sure that the major you want is in CAS?

well, i want to major in communications. the problem is, i had wanted to do a double major with english or some other liberal arts section, but i heard that cannot be done between steinhardt and CAS at NYU. soo... my GC said maybe i should go with the one with more options but i still think steinhardt is probably the right decision. anyway, thanks for the advice. i'm going to get working on everything today.

Well, I think you are doing the right thing by going with what fits you best. Anyway, good luck in the regular decision round. I am applying as a transfer student, but I applied as a senior in high school, so I know what you're going through. I wish you all the best and be sure to post when you get into Steinhardt!

I just got into Steinhardt for communications and I'm thinking about minoring in Poli sci. When I went to an info session I asked the admissions rep and they said I, majoring in Comm. at Steinhardt can minor in anything at CAS but it doesn't work easily the other way around. So I would definitely go for Steinhardt. I hope this helps ;)

okay good. i will go with steinhardt then. thanks!
