So I’m applying to Tulane University regular decision. It’s a school I’m definitely interested in but probably won’t attend if I’m paying more than $50,000 a year to attend. So do I have a good chance at getting admitted and any possibility of getting some merit scholarship money?
Anyways these are my stats:
UW GPA: 3.77
Weighted GPA:4.14 (Huge upward trend in grades though. My last 3 semesters I’ve gotten all A’s and 1 B)
SAT I: 2080 (650 Critical Reading, 740 Math, 690 Writing)
Major:Economics
Race:White
Gender:Male
Location:California
EC’s: The two main ones are Class Officer and Debate Club.
I would say my essays were fairly good, nothing spectacular but solid.
I think I’ll have two very good recommendations on my behalf.
Here’s a link to a composite list (partial and not updated) of some of the merit scholarships through the EA round. I’d say you have a shot, but it’s not completely objective it seems. From other comments Tulane applies the same std to the RD round so you can use this as you see fit to speculate.
Well I guess that’s good. Hopefully I get in with some money because Tulane really is a school that I think would be awesome to attend. But it’s not worth coming out of college with tons of student loan debt.
You are 100% correct, no school is worth going into heavy debt over. But I also agree with the other posters that if you get accepted, which I think is a strong possibility, you will also get some merit aid. It isn’t a 100% sure thing, of course, but you seem to have the stats and resume to get a sizable ($20,000?) award. Maybe better even, but in that range I would think. Because when you look at the table linked to above, you see these two data points, both of which got $20,000.
So one of them has your SAT score but a lower GPA, while the other has your exact GPA and a lower SAT. Amazing how those two points lined up for comparison. So that is why I say I think you will get probably that much, with a chance for the next award up of $25,000/year. Maybe.
Almost entirely by numbers, although I would phrase as something like “Tulane reserves the right to use these merit awards to help attract students for reasons in addition to scholarship”. But experience and observation indicate it is heavily weighted to stats. If you look at that table, you can see the general consistency of awards to numbers.
@anxiousenior1 Thanks! My daughter was just accepted and didn’t get any info on Merit Awards in her admin letter. I recently saw on their website that the scholarship deadline is Jan 15th. Wondering if missed our opportunity.
No problem @dshead ! However, I did receive news of my merit scholarship in my physical acceptance letter. It is possible your daughter may not have received any? Or perhaps you’re talking about the acceptance message on the portal?
@anxiousenior1 We just got her acceptance letter in the mail and it appears she didn’t get any. Again, we didn’t apply for any merit based scholarships (thought they were automatic) and she had great credentials. It appears she didn’t receive any…hmmmm obviously this ways in to our decision about being able to attend.
