Need help advice for applying to Midd and how good does the app look like

SAT - 2270 (700 R, 800 M, 770 W)
Sub SAT - 800 Math2, 800Physics, 780Chem
APs - 6 done so far (4 5s and 2 4s) - 3 more in senior year
Tough, rigorous curriculum in Science and Engg and in top 7-8% in School (525 kids)
ECs - Usual Honor Society stuff, AMIE school winner, Varsity Swim team, Taekwondo Black Belt (done for 7 years), JSA,
Done Math teaching job, Research in Medical Hospital in summer for 6 weeks
Recs - Pretty decent (I think)

Top LACs being considered Swarthmore, Haverford, Middlebury and Carleton (the last two are at a distance … so may be if Swarthmore or Haverford reject

I think Swat might go for you, with that science thing goin’ for you. You look excellent ,but what is special about you? Be sure you make a case for why each of the schools particularly would find you an asset to their student body. Have you been able to visit? What about e-mailing a prof with an intelligent question? Carleton likes sciencey kids, too. Where are you from?

Thanks OldbatesieDoc. Thanks for the tips/ideas. Yes, Swat is high up on the list, visited there thrice (including an overnight stay) so it is all over the the Why Swat essay. Feel good about it. From Northeast (NJ), so proximity is also a factor.
Yes, applied to Carleton but it is too cold up there (and it is much farther). Do you think Middlebury looks at sciencey kids favorably? Thought about it in the last few days and it doesn’t require any additional writeup so applied, if admitted then will surely visit to check it out

When my son was looking at colleges in 2005, he had decided that he wanted to go to a LAC with a strong science departments. He also visited or was interested in the usual suspects, Swat, Williams, Bowdoin, etc… In the end, he liked the commitment that Middlebury had given to the sciences in the past 15 yrs. (see new science bldg., placement of graduates in top medical & graduate schools).

It was finally about “fit”, he really liked it there. As a self-proclaimed ‘science geek’, he would tell you that he made the right choice to attend Midd and that it prepared him for grad. school.

Midd does try to balance Sciency and Artsy kids, and has a very strong science faculty. I think you look good for anywhere, just suggesting some alternatives in case things don’t go your way. Good luck!

lakesrunning - good to know that sciences attracted your son and he liked his decision. is their med acceptance rate good?

OldbatsieDoc - Thanks for the encouragement, i hope spreading the net wide will help catch something good, after Brown’s rejection … a bit cautious

Just remember, it isn’t because you aren’t qualified-you just didn’t catch anyone’s imagination. The competition is ridiculous and it is hard not to get discouraged. You might want to apply to an early action school so you can get an acceptance and then that will get rid of some of the stress.
My oldest s was wait-listed at Harvard, Amherst, Dartmouth, Tufts, and Midd 2 years ago and rejected by Princeton and Williams. His stats were very similar to yours, and it really crushed him. The advise I give people as a result is to make sure you have a safety or two, and don’t let it hurt your self-esteem. There are so many qualified kids; it’s a global market now. My s came off the Midd wait list and is now a happy sophmore with a 3.5 average. So it wasn’t because he wasn’t good enough. Just not unique enough with his background, geographic area, race, socioeconomic status, and ECs(newspaper editor, student gov, and varsity sports not good enough to play in college) It’s a jungle out there.
You might also consider a school or 2 on the west coast-your scores are good enough for Harvey Mudd or Pomona and if you are from the NE, it can help.
