I am applying to the Hotel Administration school at Cornell RD, but my stats are all over the place and I don't know enough about the school to judge one way or the other whether I stand a chance. Help--

28 on ACT - breakdown: 33, 33, 29, 27, 25. Science&math dragged me down. SATs: 610 math, 690 cr, 730 writing. SAT II's: 610 math, 670 literature, 710 spanish.

White, coming from an extreeeemely competitive New England private school - does not rank. GPA 3.0 unweighted, 3.4 weighted. Took 1 AP sophomore year, 3 AP's junior year, 2 AP's senior year. Even though I averaged an A-/B+ in all my humanities classes consistently, the big problem for me is that I have one D+ on my transcript from geometry. My counselor has said it's going to screw me over. Great recs, lots of ECs at school including a big art portfolio, but little to no hospitality experience.

Had the interview already - went really, really well.

I dunno. You can check my stats if you profile me I got accepted ED. I think they look for much more hospitality experience. There isn't anything that you've done that you can spin towards hospitality? Are you going to be able to write strong essays? You have to show that you truly want to go to the Hotel school and not that you just want to go to Cornell. You can ask any other questions you might have about the school I'm still bouncing off the walls a little bit.

That's gonna be close. My good friend applied with a 1500 SAT and 94 overall GPA and got rejected. He went to BU on a full scholarship for a year and then transferred into Cornell. Worst comes to worst transfer in. Most of the transfers accepted had a 3.7+ in community colleges. Some of them barely have a 1000 on their SAT's. Transferring in is easy.

Hey...I hate to give bad news but based on my past experiences your chances look slim. The first time I applied I had 4.0+ GPA and 1500+ on SAT's, plus lots of extracurriculars, but didn't get in because i had no experience. I did have a couple years in retail, which I really should have played up by emphasizing the customer service aspect of it. For Cornell Hotel, they really are looking for hospitality work experience, grades are important but when you're up against other students who have similar stats (or maybe even lower) but with experience in foodservice, it's usually the latter who get in. One of the things I regret is not doing my interview in person...the interviewer they gave me lived so far from me that I had to do it on the phone and I really couldn't communicate how much I wanted to get in and what I was really passionate about. I'm not sure if you've applied yet or not but if you haven't, my best advice is even if you don't have hospitality specific work experience, try to focus your application on areas in which you did show commitment to excellent service (can you remember a past event, club, job?) Also, you can possibly find a hospitality related job right now and write that in your application, saying that now that you are a senior, you have more free time so you'll be working and can send in a recommendation or pay stubs to verify it in spring. Even though the applications are due soon, they don't get the admissions committee together to make a decision till spring so it's never too late. And if that doesn't work out, keep on trying if you really want it that bad. When I didn't get in the first time, I took a whole year off to work in the restaurant business, went to another college and applied as a transfer for Jan '06. Sorry this post was so long. Best of luck!

Just search our previous posts and the posts during the official 2010 ED acceptance. If you have trouble finding stats pm me and I'd be happy to share some of my experiences and stats with you.
