Hey everyone…I am applying RD to Bowdoin and was just wondering about my chances…any comments?

Rank: 5/275
GPA: 4.1 w
ACT: 29
SAT: 1910 (620v/670m/620w)
SAT IIs: 600 lit; 620 us hist; 640 IIc (retaking in January)
ECs: A lot…many for 4 years
Senior schedule: AP Calculus, AP Economics, AP Art History–independent study; AP Biology; AP Physics; Dual-Enrollment at U of M-Dearborn

Great Reccomenations and essays, I applied ED to Cornell and got deferred…

what do you think about not submitting my test scores??

I just finished exams and am flying home tomorrow, so here's my quick thoughts-

Don't worry about weighted GPA - Bowdoin will just unweight it.
I wouldn't submit those test scores.

Other than that, I'd say you have a decent chance. It's hard to judge chances based on a very short description of what is a long and complex application package.

If your scores aren't good, submitting definitely will hurt you. Your scores seem kind of borderline, but a 620 V does seem a bit low. It's really up to you, but typically people don't submit unless their scores are above Bowdoin's average. SAT scores are only not counted if you don't submit them, so if you do submit them, Bowdoin looks at them as any other college would. Everything else looks really good, so it's hard to say whether or not to submit those. Think it over a bit more, check out average SAT scores, and then decide.

emilyanne28, if I were you I would not submit these scores. They didn't reflect your rank and academic results. :)

=====================

This I want to ask :) What is supposed to be a borderline score as Geniusriki had mentioned?
I'm international and all I got was a decent score of TOEFL, which was a simply a language test for foreign students. I assumed int'ls have to submit SAT score as well because Bowdoin needs to know our ability in reading and writing in English.
But as the score came out, I feel submitting it would hurt my chance. My SAT score is CR 580 Wr 640 and Math 750; for SAT II I got Math IIC 780, Physics 750 and Chem 800. Do you guys think I need to submit SAT score anyway?
Any advice/response will be appreciated ;)

JAAH: amazing sat2's! CR is pretty low, 640 is alright for writing.... but youre an international so im sure the 580 wont hurt you esp cause eng. is not your 1st language.

jaah, submit those SAT IIs!! Those are amazing. And as far as I know, internationals are not required to submit SATs--I know someone who definitely didn't, and if I were you, I wouldn't. And orca25, I think you're another borderline person--a 660 is a bit low, but the other scores are good so it's hard to say.

Just for the record, I was admitted RD and I submitted my score of 800 V, 680 M, 750 W (SAT II last year) The math was low, but I was valedictorian and had taken a whole bunch of APs with 5s on almost all of them. So, a sub 700 score won't kill you, certainly, but I would consider it in light of the rest of your application/other scores/GPA/class rank/ECs, etc.

thanks Geniusriki, i have pretty low sat2's so hopefully those wont hurt me too much. i have 4.12 weighted gpa (about 3.9 uw maybe?) 6 aps..... hopefully that will balance out

Thanks Geniusriki and Orca25 for the advice, I have submitted SAT II score to Bowdoin when SAT I score had not been released. Geniusriki, are your sure the international you know comes from An english-as-a-second-language like me (I'm from Vietnam:)). I'm afraid she/he is either Singaporean or Indian, because ppl from those countries use English like native speakers.
However, I'm sending a expository prose to Bowdoin for their evaluation. I hope it will compensate for/replace SAT I score.

Hi, I'm also applying for RD and I was wondering if I should submit as well. I think I'm probably going to, but the Math worries me...
650M 760V 800W Sat2s: Writing 800, Spanish 770, US Hist 760

ilikenoodles, those scores aren't bad. Go ahead and submit them because your awesome Verbal and Writing scores will definitely compensate for the math. Your SAT II scores are really good as well.

Hey I got accepted ED I to Bowdoin a week ago, so if you were wondering about SATs I can give you a "case study."
New SAT: 2020 (660v, 650m, 700w).
SAT II : Japanese 750, US History 730.

I know my SATs are lower than average, especially for an ED admit, but the Japanese language thing helped a lot.

I think for Bowdoin, the SAT I is used for placement purposes only, so if you are admitted, you NEED to submit SAT I scores. But for admission, the SAT I is optional.

As a first year student, I can tell you that SAT I is not used for placement. During the week of orientation, you will be required to take a quantative skills exam, this is to just ensure you have basic math skills. If you do have AP math credit you can use it to place out of lower level math classes (i.e. Differential, Intergral, or Multivariate Calculus). Also as a first year you are required to take a seminar, there is no placement exam for this. So basically the point of SAT is almost moot, but it is used for statistical purposes.

On another note Emilyanne28 like you I was deferred from Cornell last year. I think that if you didn't submit your SAT scores you would have a good chance of getting in.

Math courses aren't actually required, so you'd just place into the appropriate level. I'd imagine they'd put you into whichever one would be most suitable. You wouldn't actually get credit for it though.

Insane_Membrane I would assume that you could place out. So most likely you would end up in Multivariate Calculus. Just make sure that you let Bowdoin know that you have college credit.

RunningforLife, I am pretty sure the SAT 1 is used for placement in Math. Our math SAT score was one of the things we had to fill out on the placement sheet.
