A bunch of random questions that we need to know.

1) Which Cornell college are you applying to?
2) For Cornell, switching to RD will hurt your chances, but since the ED deadline is already passed, it might be too late to change. Don't know about that.
3) What about extracurriculars?

And just a random question for you, but how did you go about learning Japanese?

I'm applying to CAS
I don't have very strong extracurriculars (ie sports, class council, music, etc), but I did a lot of community service.
My school is also very competitive, sending about 8 people to harvard each year.
I lived in Japan and learned japanese.

I'm thinking of sending them a letter to say I want to switch. When you say "hurt" your chance, do you mean I will have less chance than normal RD applicants or just less chance than ED applicants?

They're not going to make a mark on your folder and during RD, go "OMG! This person decided not to do Cornell ED! REJECT!" No, you won't get the benefit of having applied ED if you change, but your chance isn't going to decrease, IMO.

You have a good GPA and SAT scores. As long as you have decent ECs, I'd say you're in the running - though of course, by ED, you'd have a pretty good chance as opposed to a decent one. Why are you switching to RD?

Well you can always technically decline an ED decision by citing financial reasons. I think switching to RD will hurt your chances but I would strongly recommend keeping your options open, so it's kind of a tough decision. Where else are you applying?

It's definitely a tough decision for me. I don't really want to apply ED and then decline because that takes a lot more steps (waiting to hear from them, etc.) and I do always want to keep Cornell as an option when I get into other colleges as well. (I don't want to decline ED and then be like, "omg these RD financial packages aren't that great either, I should have stayed ED."

I'm thinking of applying to

Harvard
Columbia
Barnard
Tufts
BC
Northwestern
Wash U
NYU
Carnegie Mellon
U Mass

I think you have a good chance for Cornell if you showed strong interest and enthusiasm in your essay, since your ECs dont show concentrated focus in one area but your SAT and GPA are pretty good. Also I guess you could have taken more AP exams to boast your chance.

I am taking 4 AP classes this year, and I will probably be taking 6 AP exams (even though they wouldn't know it on my app)

In my essay, I mentioned why I want to go to Cornell and a lot of things to show them that I "did the research." Ahh, I really do hope I will still have a chance in RD... ><

Also, I did >200 hr of volunteering, am in NHS, math team, amnesty international, and Chinese school. I agree that my ECs aren't that great at all... I'm sending a portfolio and an art teacher's rec that should be excellent. There will be a lot of people applying from my school though (like 40+)

haha at least your essay >> mine... I basically told them "I forgot to do any research". Other than that our app is very similar, similar SAT + Chinese + sending in art work + similar ECs + similar volunteering hours + math team. Just i m Canadian + doing IB + very strong in math/science contests. lol would be cool if we both make it (and damn hope not the other way around). GLs!
