The purpose is stately quite simply in the letter. We want to tell a student that we were impressed with their application.

Likely letters aren't about statistics. If an application gives us an overall "wow" feeling, we can put it on the list to get a letter. Yes, the stats have to be great, but there's usually something that comes across in the activities, essays, and recs that is truly striking.

Like the Dean said, I think that everyone is overlooking just the basic stats. Stats are good but they can only go so far. Other qualities will help one have a better chance of receiving that letter.

These two colleges are in the same calibar. They are both high accredited colleges that probaly have same guidelines. Only applying to the school will allow you to know if you will get in. Who are we to say you have just an "ok" chance or your getting in.

Clearly, you are well qualified and deserve to be admitted. William & Mary is, as you well know, a state supported school which can handpick out-of-state candidates depending on their "needs" for a particular class so there is no reliable way to handicap your chance of admission based on info. given by you and info. known about prior classes. Unfortunately, even as strong as your app. appears to be, you may suffer due to being out-of-state and being from a high application state(New Jersey). Good luck to you.

yeah i agree with garrity, you are oos and from jersey, the highest oos applicants with pa in second, atleast your not female, it could be worse

^^
I second with blondechild. For some reason, people today still think William and Mary is private. Maybe that's why Nichol removed the cross... oh well.
