me too
rejected

got the email.
I thought Caltech will lower their sat cr and writing criteria for internationals but clearly it's not like that.
Good luck to everyone else~

rejected here as well.

There aren't strict criteria for anyone and when I was on the committee I do recall the verbal/writing scores being given less weight for internationals. International admissions are just very competitive in general.

Spacepirate - I am so sorry, it's is SO HARD for internationals =//

Good luck to the schools that you are still waiting for!

Is everyone meant to get the e-mail? My friend didn't get one. He hasn't got a fedex yet either.

I have not received anything, either. I have started to think that Caltech forgot to consider my application :) I will send an e-mail asking for the admission decision now. (I am from Turkey)

today I got the Fedex from caltech! strange but I'm accepted.
whooooooaaaaaaa!

drum rolls, for Noldo! :)

I didn't get the email, but I got a FedExed acceptance in the post today. (:D :D)

For the record:

Decision: Accepted

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: CR:800 M:770 W:750 (8 essay)
[] SAT IIs: Math II 800, Physics 800, Chemistry 790
[] GPA: 82/100 unweighted
[] Rank: 2/32
[] AP/IB scores: ---
[] AMC12/AIME/USAMO: ---
[] Research: None.
[] Courseload: Standardised (Indian syllabus, CBSE). More or less comparable to AP courses or a bit beyond them (at least in Chem).
[li] Other stats: NTSE scholarship, a few olympiads. Nothing too special.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: Were probably the best bit of my application. Long essay (Common App) was a rather dorky 'why math is gorgeous and splendid, and why calculus is elegant but geometry reminiscent of a shady B-movie, and how math and I drink tea over crumpets' sort of thing (no, I'm not exaggerating). The essay for the supplement was flippant and involved my disastrous robotics attempts; the short answers were v. straightforward, with the exception of the 'humour' one, for which I wrote a 150-word mishmash of terrible scientific puns (resistance begins at ohm!). My 'box' was more or less an exercise in graphic design, with my photography, some equations, and a lot of writing splashed all over it amusingly.
[] Recommendations: Were rather good, I suppose.
[li] Hook (if any): None.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: United Kingdom citizen, living in India.
[] School Type: Private, international, and well-known/respected.
[] Ethnicity: Asian.
[] Gender: Female.
[li] Major strength/weakness: Creativity and passion looked good, I guess. (TO wit, I'm a complete geek, and it showed!) Also fifteen years old (!!), which might have helped in a way.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars listed on app: Not much, really -- debate, MUN, math team, cryptography team (yes, really!), graphic design hobby-ing, creative writing.
[] Summer Activities: Summer scholarship camps, and insane quantities of travel.
[] Why I think I was accepted/denied: I have no idea, really. I know I'm not half bad, but I didn't really expect to be accepted as an international asking for aid. Thrilled about it, though!
[] What's your favourite flavor of pie? Apple.
[li] Other thoughts: I like my aid offer. So yeah, I'll be at Caltech barring parental objection.[/ul]
[/li]

(And har har, k_twin.)

Congratulations, Noldo!
Does this mean that Caltech only sent e-mails to rejected international students? Is there anyone who learned his/her acceptance by e-mail? Because I have not received anything yet (no e-mail, airmail or FedEx).

^ Hey, how is it going with you! I guess you know who I am. =D

Congrats, Noldo. I told you so. =p

I am OK. I was a little bit worried since I was deferred at Harvard EA, and rejected at MIT (strange?). Now that I am accepted to Amherst, Williams, and Caltech, I am a little bit more relaxed. (though my workload is still huge). How is it going with you? (Of course, I know who you are. Not int'l and Taiwan :P)

Oh wow. Congrats! Dude, chill a bit and relax - after all, it's your senior year. =D haha jk, I know you have grand ambitions.

I was admitted into (or received likely letters from) MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Columbia, and UCLA so far. I am so happy, and pretty shocked too, since I was deferred Pton ED. I am kind of bent on attending MIT, unless something drastic happens.

Good luck with you and your Ivy decisions next week! If you have facebook, add me =p

ps. did you ever figure out what happened to your AP exams?

Thanks...

Wow, you should be happy to be deferred Pton ED. After all, you would not hear all these great news, otherwise. I would attend MIT, if I were you.

I do not have facebook at the moment, but I may have one after may. When I have one, I will add you.

I retook 2 of them. Then, they found some of them. Last month, I learned that I got 7 5s. (It was a kind of tiring process, but at least, it was not for nothing.)

7 5s

Wow, amazing. I guess if you were not international, you'd be in MIT already. Well, I really hope you make Harvard when the decisions come out next week!

Thanks. :$
I hope you will get into Princeton. (I will go to Princeton if I get in. Maybe something changes your mind about attending MIT, and we may see each other at Princeton :) (BTW, Harvard is not really my first choice anymore))

Decision: Denied

Stats: **[ul]
[] SAT: 2260 CR: 710 M: 800 W: 750
[] SAT IIs: Math 2c 800; Physics 800; Chemistry 790
[] GPA: 97%
[] Rank: 1/109
[] AP/IB scores: Predicted 43 in IB
[] AMC12/AIME/USAMO: AMC 12 - 114; AIME 5
[] Research: yes (in neurology and physiology)
[] Courseload: most demanding
[li] Other stats: various math & science awards; many school awards
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: ppl said they were pretty amazing
[] Recommendations: one good, one excellent (I'm assuming)
[] Hook (if any): none
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: South Korean (studying in Canada)
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Major strength/weakness: weakness - international asking for financial aid
[/ul]Other Factors:**
[] Extracurriculars listed on app: basketball, research, tutor, math/science, 2 volunteering organizations
[] Summer Activities: invitational math camp, research
[] Why I think I was accepted/denied: caltech prefers well-lopsided over wellrounded? Also, I think asking for financial aid just killed my chances (didn't know Caltech disliked internationals asking for money)
[] What's your favourite flavor of pie? maple pecan
[*] Other thoughts: Congrats to everyone who got in! For future international applicants, if you really want to attend Caltech, then do not apply for financial aid!

My understanding is that the international financial aid thing only affects candidates on the margins--i.e. they admit international students without regard for financial aid until the financial aid pool happens to be used up. Only after that point do they even look at it, so it only affects the last few on the cusp.

Wade
I do not see any reason why you were denied. You have great stats and ECs. I guess its the tough international pool. I hope you have many wonderful options.
