You know, I have become jaded with stats. After reading the ED thread and seeing some of the high-stats applicants getting deferred, I just want to get INTO college already, and not worry about trivial high school. Just let us study. Geeze. Oh yeah and drink alchohol, experiment with mind altering drugs, get our first D, become a linux user, anything new really.. and anything college..

But to my point, I am starting this discussion to see what you guys want to do at Rice. I am sort of undecided, but I applied RD to Humanities for language, probably Classics or German. I like computer science, philosophy and biology, even though I do not know much about Rice's programs there. Anyway, if there are any others who are looking to Rice as a way out of their respective city, speak up!

Uh... people have definitely heard or Rice in New York. I live just outside, and have yet to meet anyone mildly educated who has "never heard of Rice"

I don't think it's a matter of whether anyone has heard of Rice or not in NY. There's people in every state that have heard of it and that haven't. It's simply whether or not you meet the people who are acquainted with Rice.

It's similar to California.. if you ask anyone like a neighbor, chances are they won't have heard of it. But if you ask any college-minded student or teacher at my school, most of them have heard of it.

And I agree with pebbles, the people I've talked to in NY have heard of Rice. :)

I don't know guys - I wear my Rice sweatshirt in NY and people ask me questions like - "does it say beans on the back?" and "is that your favorite food?" and "where do you go to college again?"

Yeah I should have applied ID, but would I really have that much better chances? I know most of the best candidates apply ID, and the rates for RD are much lower, probably for the reason above.

id could be just another alternative for people who finished their college app early in time for the deadline (like two days before without knowing that there's an id), like me.

Totally unrelated, but I'd say 90% of all the hispanics (foreign born) have not even heard of Harvard. It's horrible because my dad is completely apathetic whenever I tell him I'd like to go to an Ivy school someday. Anyone else have that problem?

My parents are an annoying combination of ignorance and apathy. When I tell them that I want to go to a college they've never heard of, they make a face as if they are tasting some strange, yet tasty exotic food and mumble "that sounds nice," followed by "what state is it in?" At this point I have memorized my father's credit card number so I don't have to run it by them every time.

Rhomtyr, my dad's kind of apathetic about what college I'm going to like your dad, but my mom's really paranoid about it all.

And boethian, haha my parents used to be kind of ignorant about what colleges were out there, so I started to talk about different colleges to them and now they're much more knowledgeable about schools that they never heard of before.
