I'm a very moderate drinker -- I've been to some parties with alcohol in high school, but I've never vomited, passed out, or been hung over, and I have a very low tolerance and dislike the taste of beer. I'm not morally opposed to alcohol and think the Swedish drinking age (18) is more reasonable than the American one, but rowdy parties and out-of-control binge drinking don't appeal to me at all. I've decided not to worry too much about it though... I'm sure there are many other options for entertainment, and there are obviously other places to hang out on weekends than the frat houses.

Well, I drink a reasonable amount at parties (and sometimes at home), but I'm confused, like if there is so much alcohol, who supplies them? Wouldn't you end up paying a considerable amount at every party? I have trouble picturing that, considering the number of parties. Anyone knows bout this?

I'm sure there are many other options for entertainment, and there are obviously other places to hang out on weekends than the frat houses.^^

I do hope so..
I'm not against alcohol consume or anything - everybody 's free to do whatever she/he likes...
I just suffocate when I think about virtually hundreds of identical party nights with beer all over the place and inebriated people..beer is cheap:D literally and metaphorically

I'm a big girl, I'll find a way to survive...I just have to reread the D's viewbook and come to my senses :)

^about the financial part of parties (unintended word game), I know that many school sponsor them and prefer to keep the parties under their control...don't worry, there will be massive amounts coming from everywhere without you having to move a finger (I suppose)..

Maybe frats' own funds?

Guys, Dartmouth is more than drinking! The people who go there are smart, independent, and way too cool to spend all their time binge drinking and binge puking. Yes, there are rowdy parties at the frats, but there's lots and lots of other stuff to do too. Check out the new fitness center. Check out the cultural events at Hopkins. Check out the Skiway about 20 minutes away.

No one talks about the parties where people behaved themselves, sipped one beer, got silly, and went back to their dorm by a reasonable hour. But really, it's more common than not.

O nice, thats great to know, thx :)
Btw, change of topic, but I keep hearing about having to send in deposits to confirm accepting their offer. Nothing in the package I received from Dartmouth mentions this, but is it really important?

Thanks VerryHappy for the encouraging reply.
I know u're right. But I've just became paranoid this time of the year..no offence, pleeeease

I haven't seen any comments about such a deposit in my on-line financial information... guess mail will clear things up tommorow.. it's too soon to worry about that though

I'm so excited about going to Dartmouth! I already bought my sweatshirt and everything! I don't drink either. So that's like, what, three nondrinkers so far? And I'm sure they'll be pleny more so I'm not too worried about the drinking.

JidiJidiBangBang, Dartmouth does not require a deposit. It says it on the letter you have to send them saying if you will accept or decline your seat.

I'm a bit concerned about the Greek life at Dartmouth - I don't have much of a choice since only Dartmouth accepted me, and I'm very happy with it, but I'm still wondering how much they dominate student and social life there, and whether they are a net positive or negative.

I'm new to this board...and I got accepted to Dartmouth. I will be going to the little dimensions thingy. It would be nice to meet some of the people on this board there!

(Why do they call it dimensions? I prefer open house it more blunt but..that just semantics) .

yay cool144 I'll be going to Dimensions too. how long are u staying there?

I'm a little disappointed I can't go to Dimensions (class trip to europe) but I'll probably try to visit campus once more.

To answer a lot of questoins at once:

1)Frats are not the only social outlet here they should not worry anyone. Sure, people go to them, but it's really not everything. If you're a nondrinker, you will be in no way isolated from the social scene.
2)The frats aren't that "rowdy". Sure drinking happens there, but its more of a matter of personal choices.
3)Yes, all parties are free. The frats pay for all the drinks, etc. The money comes from the social dues that the brothers pay.
4)It's called Dimensions of Dartmouth because they try to give you a glimpse in a short period of time of all of the dimensions of a Dartmouth education - academically, socially, etc.

Well Judy1688, I think I am going to stay there during the whole duration of dimensions which is three or four days right? I hope to see u there.

Hey! so excited for the 2011's... dartmouth is the best place ever. ask me any questions you'd like and if you come up i would definitely show any of you around.

oh and like bulldogbull said- no pressure on drinking- the scene is really awesome- if you want rowdy you can go to a frat that is more rowdy.. but some are just a really chill laid back scene.. each has its own personality and since everything is free you can hop from frat to frat and check out which of your friends are where etc. -not like the typical frats... anyone they havent seen before is welcomed in and etc. just message me or whatever if you have any questions.

i am a non drinker who hopes to be in the class of 2012. maybe i'll see you there!

Thanks vanessav27, I love drinking (I'm not alcoholic though) and I love outdoors, so I'm really looking forward to studying at Dartmouth.
Got a question for all who's going to Dimensions: on the schedule they handed to me, it seems like I'll arrive late afternoon on 18th and leave 21st morning. This leaves only about 2 & 1/2 day of activity. Is this what it's supposed to be, or am I going to be missing out on a few things? Thx in advance :)

if youre going to be there from the 18th to the 21st that means you'll be there for the entire time...

come for as long as you can. its a great time, but dont worry too much if you do miss some of it.
