RD Prim./Sec. Chances

I am planning on applying to Cornell, utilizing the primary/secondary school option. Primary: Engineering (Electrical, Computer), Secondary: Liberal Arts (mathematics)
I am from rural VA and attend a fairly competitive school.

SAT: M730 V720 W660 (twice)
SAT II: MII:720 Chem:560 (eh..i didnt have much chem exp. at the time, taking it, and math, again in January, expecting close to 700 on chem)
GPA: 3.93 (rank: 22/400)

EC's:
4 years Outdoor Track (Captain Twice, District Finalist)
3 years Cross Country (Captain, Regional Competitor)
3 years Indoor Track (Captain, Regional, State Competitor)
4 years Student Council Member
2 years National Honor Society
1 year International Club
4 year Church Youth Group activity
Total Community Service about 400 hours

Began, and am the host of Weekly Math Sessions, where I tutor several kids in Calculus, and SAT math (raised scores, 70, 100 points). We meet 3 days a week for two hours.

Work Experience: Promoted from busser to server at Outback Steakhouse (one year, still there), was a salesman at Sears for a year, and am a self-employed Landscaper during the summer.

Other: Teacher Recs pretty good, very qualified teachers
Essay recieved very good reviews, wrote a different type essay in the place of William Wallace running up a mountain. haha

Hook: Spanish and Caucasian, Brother grad. from Brown Engineering, helping me write my engineering essay.

Btw, I got rejected from Columbia ED

i forgot to add that i was voted 'most determined male' and recieved an award for my GPA while competing in Varsity sports...not much but it all counts

....don't every1 talk at once

Yea, you're pretty good. But I wouldn't say that your hook would be primarily having an Spanish background. Do you speak Spanish? Did you live in Spain? Other than that I'd say you have a good shot. 30% admittance rate is definitely a help for those who are truly qualified.

Btw, I hope you are taking AP Physics/AP Chem and AP Calc BC.

thanks for the advice, majman.
o and i am taking AP Chem right now, planning on taking AP Physics next semester, nd BC last term with a 3 and a 4 on AP.

30% is the admittance rate for the engineering school??
And as far as Spanish goes, i dont live in spain. haha but i do get to check hispanic.

osheezie, I cannot be more surprised to find that we have ALOT in common, almost everything!
Best of luck to you!

haha wow that's awesome, I love it when that happens. hopefully we'll both get in.
for the common app, should I check Hispanic (then from the pull down menu Spain), and also white/caucasian.

btw is anyone else applying with the primary/secondary option?

Osheezie, do you really consider yourself to be part of the Hispanic community, or do you just think that it will help you get into Cornell. Do what you think is fair and true.

yes, I am quite proud of my Spanish origins, and have considered writing a supplemental essay on how my family traditions have shaped me. I am 1/4, so I think it is quite legit

Just making sure. People who say they are Hispanic, but are really about 1/128th Mexican and don't know how to say hello in Spanish, just to get into college just annoy me. But to be honest, I don't really know if it is going to make a huge difference to be honest.

yea exactly. i know a girl who got into Virginia Tech with a 1000 just because she was 1/32 Native American and put down Native American as her race.
in my case, I don't think it will make that big of a difference, but I figure I might as well put it down.

Osheezie, I'm Spanish from Spain too!!! Rep.! Yeah I checked off Hispanic because we speak Spanish and I have to eat spanish food (:/ i like italian better) and we have loud spanish parties, so I think I'm hispanic, lol. If your secondary is in CALS, your SATII won't hurt you because they are only recommended, not required. Buena Suerte!

haha awesome, yea the spanish speaking / parties stopped last generation :( lol but I still take part in those of my best friend, who's bolivian. haha I do speak some spanish though, good luck to you too!

and awesome, I didn't know that the SAT II wasn't required for CALS. wooo hoo i'm pumped for Cornell!
I love the fact that I actually have a chance here (I applied ED to Columbia, where I didn't have a chance in hell)

hey grant, did u also select Spain from the pull down menu.

hey does any1 know if cornell's notification date is April 1st like everyone else?

i don't know if being spanish/caucasian is really a hook, although of course you should put it, it's your ethnicity
i don't think it'll really help you get in, since Spanish people, while obviously hispanic are technically european and part of the caucasian race. sometimes being latino helps b/c they are an underrepresented minority

anyway good luck, you'll probly get in and just in my personal opinion, cornell > columbia

haha thanks molly, and as far as I'm concerned, now that i was rejected from columbia, cornell is OBVIOUSLY better. lol who would want to go to columbia anyway? geesh

btw...ur name is molly but your gender says 'not saying'..i wonder? haha well if ur a girl thats cool and if ur a guy then i don't blame u for 'not saying'. haha

Well' I'm actually a BOY and everyone thinks its funny my name is molly...its NOT

lol jk i'm a girl..the reason it says that is b/c i just made a CC account a few weeks ago b/c i wanted to post a question, and i didnt bother filling out all those things like gender or birthday.

my name actually isnt even molly...i just typed it in as a username without thinking and gave them an email address i didnt use b/c i didnt want junk mail....which i realize now is really weird and everyone on this site calls me molly. heh
