RD requested to change to ED by Adcom

Hi everyone. Im new to this thread because im an Early decision applicant to Cornell who was unfortunately deferred. However, Rochester is one of my top choices too and i applied last month. I got a letter just yesterday thanking me for my application, yet stating that i can still switch my application to early decision and it tells me to call my admissions counselor, make an interview (which i did already before i submitted my app), and send in the early decision form. Does this mean they already accepted me/want me so they just want me to make it binding? Or do they send this to many/most?

i got that letter too, and by the phrasing of it, im almost positive they send it to a majority of applicants that have already submitted an application right after the reply date for most early schools

tho im not totally sure

i thought of that scenario but it didnt make sense to me, the deadline was last month! no exceptions, theres no rolling ED..........theres only 1 ED and its over......im skeptical of that idea....it really sounded to me that they were trying to persuade you to apply ED, plus, skools do not push students to apply early unless they want them from the beginning

yea i got that letter yesterday too. I'm pretty sure we're in and they might be a little desperate. Post your stats so we can see whether thay are sending them to similar people:

Horrible ECs (really horrible)

My guess was that they sent it to everyone.

i highly doubt it. We sent our applications already, and the ED DEADLINE PASSED OVER A MONTH AGO. It doesnt make sense at all watsoever!

they have a second early decision plan, it says so on their website, not shady at all

and if u think about it, it makes sense. the ppl that submitted their applications about a month before RD is due (even if it was for scholarship consideration) are probably motivated students, so it would make sense to ask them to switch to ED.

plus, it looks and reads like any college mail u got back in september-october asking u to consider applying under the ED plan.

all this makes me think that this letter is one that is sent out to every person that has already submitted an application

and im not posting my stats because they don't help me prove my point.

You are 100% correct chemaddict. Nothing at all wrong with the letter. I have been receiving "special applications" from other schools and understand the competitive nature of college admissions not only from a student's persepctive but also from the college's viewpoint.

I have received tons of mail and spamfrom many top schools including Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Emory, WUSTL and many others.

U of Rochester is totally legit and was just inviting us to apply ED II before the deadline. Of the schools posted above, I received very similar notices via e-mail advising me of their deadlines. "Its not too late, if xxxx is your # 1 college, apply ED ASAP!"

Could it be that Rochester is trying to bump up its stats (ED acceptance rate) by asking you and others to switch?

Bklyn2Cornell, is it even legal for you to switch your Rochester application due to the fact that you applied ED to Cornell? Does a deferral decision release you from your contractual obligation with Cornell?

yes it does, they called me and told me this on the phone too

i think the reason u of rochester (as well as pretty much any other school that offers u to switch) is asking to switch to ED is that colleges love ED people because it's a binding agreement. the college doesn't have any doubt that you're not goign to go there, and can plan accordingly. it's simple and easy. so they want as many ppl to switch as possible

the ED II deadline, if anyone's interested, is the same as RD, and you hear back 3 weeks later. i wish my parents would let me switch...

i dont want to switch. ill keep it regular. I THINK WE CAN ALL ASSUME WE'RE GETTING INTO ROCHESTER :) i just need to wait on cornell. I still have Cornell as my number 1.

My son also received this letter. His stats were 1510/2260, 96.5 gpa. When he got it, he was curious whether this is sent out to all applicants or only to a particular group. It sounds like the latter.

I do think they timed the letter very carefully. It almost seems as if they were fishing for "good" students who might have been turned down by their EA or EDI schools.

My son wants to stick with RD. Did anyone send a polite response back to their admissions counselor if they are simply sticking with RD?

I may just call her (Jackie Mendez). I probably wont do anything about it and stick with RD. But ill prob call to show my continued interest.

I called the admissions office earlier today and left a message letting them know that I wanted to switch to EDII. I just received the letter a few days ago and did not have time to inform them, plus I had to discuss it over with my parents. After my rejection from CMU, I decided that Rochester was my 2nd choice. I realllly hope I at least get accepted to there. I was nominated for a scholarship from my teacher for that school, and I am very interested in going there.

I'm sticking with RD since I'm applying to a bunch of BS/MD (combined medical) programs. I really want to get into REMS though.

sigh.. rochester has now become my top choice, however, my parents are definitely against me switching to ED, which is a pity (i would love to find out in three weeks).. she wants me to wait on all my colleges (i don't know why, she mumbled something about wanting to see their aid offers)

i guess im mostly fine with it, but it means i have to do the penn application which simply needs to die.

I got that letter too.
I'm applying to REMS.
