Not too upset. I decided about a month ago Lawrence is where I want to go.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Any other midwest people? Any indiana people?

Is there a reason everyone wants to share their stats? Grinnell is a great school, so of course you had to do well to get in. Not making any judgements or anything, i was just wondering.

Does anyone plan on participating in a sport there? i was in contact with their men's soccer coach during the fall but i dunno. If i were to participate i'd want it to be really low key, and some people i've talked to say it is pretty mellow.

Are people going out for any of those visit weekends?

im going out, and im from the midwest, and i posted my stats...i think. People are just posting their stats so that other people that are thinking about applying can see what some students stats look like, I mean, what else is the cc about, every other post is someone posting stats. anyway, i've heard that all their sports are really low key and fun, and they make no cuts so everyone plays. guess that's what happens when you have a school of 350 in a class.

Please share stats and ECs so that those who might apply later will get an idea about what kind of chances they may have.

Congrats to everyone who has gotten in! My S is considering applying next year. Sounds like a wonderful college.

hope that helps guide you some

tagran,
Thanks for posting your info! Wow! Very impressive! Congrats on the merit aid, too.

I also would be interested in hearing from accepted students what attracted them to Grinnell. From what I see on their website and in some books, it sounds like a wonderful place for S, who is liberal, laid back, and enjoys being in supportive intellectual environments that allow for close relationships with students and profs. He also greatly enjoys community service.

Grinnell is far from us, so it would be expensive for us to visit it so I am trying to get as much info about it as possible before springing for plane tickets.

I'd also like to know what other colleges accepted students considered. S is considering applying to Emory, Earham, Davidson and Rhodes. They seem to offer small classes, to stress ethics, and to be very student and community service centered.

I had a pretty varied selection of schools I applied to

MICA (art school), SUNY Purchase, NYU, Skidmore, Macalester, Grinnell, and Washington University in St. Louis.

What attracted me to Grinnell was the fact that it is a liberal arts school that has a good art program. I'm very interested in art, but I didn't want to go straight to art school. Seemed to defeat the purpose of college--a time to branch out. Art school was just going to focus me to a point where, what if art school wasn't for me? And I wanted history, or math, or anything? It wasn't going to hold the high academic standards I wanted in other areas. Grinnell's art program and facilities are great, so that was the main reason I applied.

After applying I became more interested in the school itself, the laid back atmosphere, maybe a touch fewer students than I would like, and honestly, in a sick way, I'm almost looking forward to living in the middle of nowhere. Then again, I also applied to NYU. Big differences. Just the fact that it seemed like I would be someone special if I went to Grinnell is what really attracts me, I don't know.

As far as those plane tickets, if it seems like this is a school your son is really going to be considering, from what I hear at least, you HAVE to visit to really get an idea of what you're getting yourself into. I'm visiting in early April on a student visit thing, and it, hopefully, won't be a bewildering horrendous shock, we'll see.

Maybe have your son check out Haverford too, my sister applied. Also Carleton and Macalester (They make an easy one trip two visits).

Thanks, tagran for all of your info and suggestions. :)

Please also post after you visit Grinnell.

i think i am in...
my admission status says:
"Received Status Start Sem.
01/24/05 Admit 2005/FA "
nothing about the aid though...

:)

i got in, too! but only with a 13k merit aid, which leaves me 22k more to pay.. :(

dacutewabbit, yep, you're in! :) you can check your financial award letter, too. go to the services tab, and under the 'financial aid information' heading, click 'view financial aid award letter' :)

I got waitlisted.
What am I to do now?? Just wait. When do they inform the waitlisted students if they've got accepted or now. I also applied for aid so if i do get accepted will I still be offered aid.

i plan on posting after i go to college for a little while, checking under grinnell -- people have been pretty helpful to me, i feel like i should return the favor

"what am I to do now?? Just wait."

If you check articles on waitlisting on the Internet, many suggest that if a college is your first choice, send in the card and also send in a letter emphasizing that it's your first choice, and why it's your first choice. In the letter, provide an update about any achievements you've made since you applied. Also have your GC call on your behalf.

When most colleges go to the waitlist, their primary consideration is taking in students who'll definitely accept their offers. They don't want to waste time with students who'll turn them down.

PierreMarie, i also got only 13k:( damn! i wanted to use the nice lagguage tag so bad!:)

is there any possible way to convince them give me another 17k?...:P
btw i am surprised that i didn't qualify for any scholarship... not that my stats were amazing ...

dacutewabbit, since ill be deferring my matriculation from fall 2005 to fall 2006, ill be submitting a new financial aid form, so i hope -- i really hope -- that they would increase my financial aid. and i will also write to the financial aid office to consider me for the international merit scholarship: http://www.grinnell.edu/admission/internat/finaid/
:)

PierreMarie, thanks a lot! I've just wrote them an e-mail. Hope they will consider me too for the International Merit Scholarship. Good luck to you and hope we'll have the chance to meet there:P

hi, I got accepted but didn't receive enough aid to go :(
just.a.thought, 800/660, 740/790/770, don't remember GPA, school doesn't rank, undecided major

@SRMom3: congrats to your D!!! Do you know on what criteria Grinnell based its merit scholarship?? And merit scholarship = tuition fee right?

oh, I just realized that there's a page 2 of this thread :)
@Northstarmom: I got waitlisted to another school so I'm busy w/ preparing supplements for that school. But I promise the minute I'm done w/ that, I will tell ya what attracted me to Grinnell through my online research (I'm an int'l and couldn't visit the school so I can't tell you what the campus is like :) ). Also, I wanna ask you for some advice:
1. "have your GC call on your behalf." -> what is GC, Northstarmom?
2. "provide an update about any achievements you've made since you applied" -> should I write a brief update about my recent activities or should I elaborate? (I'm willing to tell them specifically about my activities, I just don't know if that's what the admissions officers are looking for)

@pierre: has G accepted your defer request??
@wabbit: What was Grinnell're reply to your e-mail? I'm writing 'em an e-mail too :) G'luck to both of us :) and to all ppl in the same situation!
