RD Thread WashU Class of 2014!

For all you folks like me who are just waiting...

We might as well get to know some potential classmates while we're at it!

I actually don't know that much about WashU- it's the only school I applied to that I had never visited. I'm a guy from Maryland, and I'm really into music (especially a cappella), being goofy, and having fun. I look forward to talking to all of you guys excited about WashU =]

What can you tell me about social life, by the way?

Heya! I’m a deferred Wash U applicant but I’m still considering Wash U as my number one choice. The university is marvelous when I visited. I was dazzled by their tall gothic buildings, enthusiastic professors (well, every school do that to show…but Wash U attracted me), and just the calm atmosphere.

From what I have heard from friends who go/went there, the social life is pretty friendly. A lot of them made great friendships during their time at Wash U. One of them recalled making friends because they were in the same class(es) and ended up studying together (such as all of them comparing their physics homework right before it was due, lol). Anyway, that’s one part of the social life there…

Hey! i got in early decision and i’m also from maryland. Good luck!

Yay for WashU st. Louis! I like the school…but doubtful about st. Loius…how is it?

I was looking at pictures of WashU the other day, and forgot how much I loved it (in light of Stanford). I was able to visit for Discovery Weekend and it was amazing. After Admit Weekends, it’ll be a tough call, I think. (WashU is the only other school I applied to, after I got in to Stanford.)

Nice to meet all of you! I have yet to hear back from anywhere, so I’m just talking to as many people as I can to help pass the time =P

What are your interests? Activities? Ideas about what field you’d like to go into?

I’m currently looking into environmental engineering/ regional planning of some sort, but I’d still LOVE to do music of some sort on the side!

Hey everyone! I’m from Northern Virginia, near Washington D.C. Wash U is my favorite school at the moment, but I’m trying to stay away from completely setting my heart on any school, since there’s no guarantee I’ll get financial aid, and who knows whether or not I’ll get in. I do really love Wash U, though, and I would be over the moon if I ended up going there.

My main academic interests are cognitive science and biology (I would consider majoring in philosophy-neuroscience-psychology if I went to Wash U). I eventually want to go into medicine, though, so I would also take the pre-med courses.

I’m also really into music - I used to play the piano (I’m on hiatus this year due to college apps/just generally being busy), and I really hope to pick it up again in college. I also really want to learn the guitar, and I love to sing, so I’d also consider trying out for an a capella or other choral group. I also do a form of classical Indian dance, but I love all kinds of dance and would like to explore western dance more in the future. Finally, I love reading and writing, and am an editor on my school’s literary magazine.

Who else is applying for scholarships?

Hi guys! I’m from Georgia and, like many others, I love WashU. Like applicannot, I visited the school for Discovery Weekend and absolutely loved it. (@ applicannot, I actually think we may have met briefly at the ABS dinner that they had one night)

I’m really interested in cognitive science, psychology and education and, just like taintedlove, I would love to be a PSP major should I attend WashU. I’m also really involved in both community service and journalism related activites.

Someone asked how St. Louis is and I would have to say that it is a great city. The school itself was surrounded by the city itslef but this atmostphere didn’t really seep into the school. It was like you were in another world as soon as you stepped onto campus but then you leave campus and you were in the city. The school, however, is not surrounded by crime as far as I know. It is located in a pretty upscale part of the city.

@taintedlove: I’m also applying for scholarships…4 if I’m remembering correctly. :)

I’m glad to see some enthusiasm for our potential future school. I’m applying RD from Kansas City.

I’m interested in the PNP program. I may also study some russian(big tolstoy fan!).

Other than WashU, where is everyone applying? Me, I’m also applying to Harvard, Columbia, and Emory.

HereToSucceed -

SWEET! If you want, you can PM me and we can try to find out who each other is. Who are you in the photograph? I’m in the blue shirt, leaning in like an idiot because I seemed to think we were all leaning in.

Yay! Nice to see so many excited people!

Other than WashU, I’m appling to Dartmouth, Cornell, McGill, and Penn State =]

Taintedlove- I COMPLETELY agree about not getting my heart set on any school. I’d rather not be let down too hard if my “top school” doesn’t accept me.

Can anyone who went to Discovery Weekend tell me what happened and what kind of experiences you had?

Hi everyone :)…I’m applying for the Mylonas scholarship.

Besides Wash U I’m applying to Boston U, the University of Pittsburgh (in), Penn State (in), the University of Michigan (in), Duke, Harvard, the University of Chicago, and Yale.

I went to discovery weekend, and it was amazing. I went knowing that I kindof liked washu, but otherwise, it wasn’t a top choice. The campus is really nice and not too big, which I liked. I liked the layout of the south 40 and then the rest of the campus.

my host was really great. it was slightly raining when i got there but she didnt mind giving me a tour of the campus. I stayed in a modern dorm which was really cool and their floor was really close and that whole afternoon and they hung out in the hallways and all the prefrosh hung out with them so that was fun.

I got to go sit in on a class, and the professor, who noticed that there were a couple prefrosh kids sitting in, encouraged us to join the groups of students in the class that were working on a problem. that really impressed me, since they really didnt have to try and include us in what they were doing.

i got to see a traditional dorm while i was there, and they were super close. while the modern dorms were overly nice, the traditional one i saw was still pretty good in its own right. a little old, but hey its vintage.

the food on campus was definitely not your average college food. so delish!

if you’re wondering, it really is true when they say that everyone is sooo nice and just generally kind. im from the east coast, so when you pass people in the hallways or on the street, you avoid eye contact and all that stuff. but anyway, everyone is crazy nice and at first it was a mini-culture shock, but i loved it.

oh and while we were there, they had a huge showcase of a bunch of acapella groups and an improv group and a slam poetry. basically it was fantastic and really cool.

in short (haha this is really long) I had a fantastic time. I had an early flight back home and I really didnt want to leave. in the 2 days i was there, i could imagine myself walking to and from class, to the library and such.

So i went from being someone who was sick of all the mail they were getting from the school (but secretly loved it, i mean who doesnt love mail) and had their sights set on other schools, to someone who absolutely loved it and couldn’t imagine going to any other school. i ended up applying ed

sorry this is such a long ramble. let me know if you had specific questions about the weekend though.

Ahhhhh that sounds amazing. I just have a weird perspective because the only person I know who goes there isn’t incredibly social, so all I hear about is academics, academics, academics.

That culture-shock sounds so nice! I’m from Maryland, so I’m still stuck in stressed-out suburbia.

Since I’m really into the a cappella, did they seem really good?

Yeah I’d say so. There were a bunch of different groups so I dont remeber all their names but each one gave a quality performance. The all male groups were great and the co-ed ones sang a paramore song I think, or some other rock song, which i thought was really cool. you can probably just google them to find out more abut them.

@greyoranges: The acapella groups were absolutely amazing. I think the ones we heard were The Amateurs, Stereotyes and Mosiac…somethings. Either way they were all really great. It made me really wish that I didn’t have a such a terrible singing voice.

@ applicannot: I’m the one in the yellow shirt at the end of the first row…I think I’m on the right side.

I’m a regular decision applicant from Maryland too! I haven’t visited yet, but I applied as a biomedical engineering major and really hope I get in! Do you know if they post decisions online or if they’re sent in the mail?

They will be posting it on the login they send you in the mail after you turned in your stuff (Pathway). On top of that, there’s snail mail.

I’m a biology major, btw. :D

Hey guys! i’m glad to see I’m not the only one anxiously waiting for WashU
I’m from a small town in Texas and i applied to WashU because I absolutely loved it!
where is everyone from?
And I’m a little nervous…my ACT scores are lower than most…so…that’s one of the things that stands in the way…
but I’d like to get to know every potential classmate!
and quick question, anyone receive information about Multicultural celebration weekend?

I’m from Texas too. And trying to get in.
I’m hopeful, but not gonna get my hopes up.
