RD

Hello,
My son loved Syracuse. We visited last year and went to an interview in the fall in NYC. He is a pretty good candidate with a 3.74 gpa and 26 ACT. My concern is grades this year are straight A’s with an ugly D in Calculus Honors so far,
which is the only blemish on his entire high school record. He has amazing letters of rec with excellent leadership in his activities. He wants Whitman. Any words of wisdom?

Hi,

I am a Whitman student here at SU, and I had a similar status and I, too, during the last semester of my senior year received a D in a marking period in AP Calc. I freaked out so much, and was very worried about the school rescinding my acceptance. Luckily, that was only the first marking period of the semester, so I worked my butt off during the remaining two marking periods and eventually pulled up the average to an A in the end. Syracuse looks at your final transcript, so it won’t know about the D you received during a marking period. As long as he works hard from now on, go to tutoring, seek advice from his teacher, then he should be able to bring up that average at the end of the semester. The overall average is what matters the most, and it is what SU looks at. Keep working hard and best of luck!

Thanks, good advice!
