re-application help

Last year I applied to Taft, Hotchkiss, Andover, and Choate. I got rejected from Taft and WLed at Hotchkiss, Andover, and Choate. However I let the three schools know that I wanted to stay on the wait list and repeatedly sent report cards, letters, and new awards. Now it's July and none of the schools have accepted yet, so I'm thinking about reapplying to the same three schools I was WLed at and a few others as safeties (Millbrook and The Masters School to name a few).
Does anyone have experience with reapplying? Did you get in or not? What did you do the second time around that you think helped?

well how do you know for sure you won't be accepted of the waitlist at any of these schools?

well i'm still hopeful but it looks pretty doubtful. this is just to make sure that i'm set for next year's applications if i need to reapply.

If I was in your shoes, I would definitely attempt to get feedback from admissions at each school. What were your perceived weaknesses, etc. ...before reapplying in the fall.

thanks creative! that sounds like really good advice. when i get home i'll call the schools and ask. or do you think it would be better if i emailed?

I would try phone first - one question/comment could lead to another. I also find some people will be more direct if they don't have to put it in writing.

Also, you may want to discuss with your parents whether they should call instead of you - would the admissions folks be more direct/blunt if it wasn't directly to you?

of course you should still apply if you want to go.
But dont give your hopes up yet and go have a fun summer
dont stress about it anymore

okay thanks for all the advice :)

well, the fact that you were rejected at taft (lower) and WL'ed at andover, etc... that shows me you were qualified, but the schools weren't quick to accept you because they thought you were going to another school, and wouldn't accept you because they weren't willing to sacrifice their yield for you. so.. try to show why you're special next year.

Blairt, what on earth leads you to that conclusion?

Many waitlisted are done so as a kindness if you attend a school that has a relationship at the schools where you are applying. You need to ask your school counselor to see why you didn't get into those schools to better understand whether to apply again.

well, collegekid, that would be quite a coincidence that all of the more competitive schools WL'ed him and the one less competitve school downright rejected him. That's all.. happens all the time.

You do see this all the time. Waitlists can mean nothing. Top schools have no intention of taking most kids on the WL. Colleges do this too. Harvard with a totally steady yield, puts thousands on it's WL each year! The less competitive school probably wasn't in the loop where this kids hook was concerned. There are just some kids you don't want to reject which include kids from feeder schools, legacies, a kid someone with pull tried to get in, good candidates you don't have aid for, you get the picture. The candidate probably did see Taft as a safety if her pull didn't work and she probably didn't even have the stats for Taft this year!

The kids on the WL who they really want to let in will know it. They will get calls. They will be told they are on top of the list. They are kept undated. This happened to me at a school where a coach took until August to find me money.

I agree with blairt, the applicant was probably qualified, taft just probably didn't want to sacrifice their yield.

hmm well i kind of agree with blairt, because i'm definitely not a legacy, don't know anyone on the board at any of those schools, and nobody from my school has ever been to those boarding schools. but i did let andover and choate know that they were my favorite school and i would go if they let me in.

oh and creative, i asked my parents about whether they should call or i should and we're going to talk about it later.

Sounds good, thumper. Good luck over the next month - you never know - you could get pulled off the waitlist still. You seem to have a great attitude. Great for you for continuing to pursue this!

thanks creative!
