Re-applying to a college

If a student who was accepted to or wait-listed at a college for the previous academic year chooses to re-apply to the same college for next year, is his/her application file from last year retained and used?

Note: Assuming that the student could't enroll last year due to sudden financial difficulties.

When my son transferred after the first semester, the second college just pulled his original application with scores, transcript, etc. I believe he did have to send the final HS transcript showing that he graduated, though. So it was pretty easy.

In that case it might be possible to defer admission for a year -that will eliminate the need to reapply.

It varies by school. My D had to submit a whole new app to transfer (for sophomore transfer).
