Re: "Ask Me" Threads

Dear the CC community,

As you may have noticed, a 33-page long "Ask Me" thread was recently shut down. The thread was started almost three years ago by a freshman at Deerfield Academy who aimed to answer applicants' questions about the school. Soon, one of his/her classmates joined in, offering a different perspective on topics discussed.

I understand why threads like this have been closed--some posters may feel intimidated to post on another person's thread, possibly coming across as trying to "steal the show." However, multiple students joined the thread over the course of these three years, and it became a large resource to applicants.

"Ask Me" threads are not exclusive. The same thing happened with a thread regarding a different school--one kid started it, a fellow student joined in, and everyone was happy. It takes one person to start the thread, but it is usually not only that one person answering questions throughout.

If I missed the reasons for these threads being closed, please let me know. My hope is that these threads can continue, and if need be, their titles changed to something along the lines of "Ask About Deerfield!" When an informative discussion is closed down, it falls through pages and pages of threads, getting lost and not finding its way back to future applicants.

Sincerely,
stargirl3

I think you’re spot on. The purpose of this website is exchanging information, and it can’t all come from one person. If the thread goes in a different direction than OP would like, so be it. I personally don’t like having to review numerous threads with four or five posts when a continuous conversation would have been more lively.
