Re: Employment on app?

Kinda weird but I always wondered what admissions is looking for when they list employment as one of the criteria for transfer selection. Do they just want to know that you have some work experience? Or that you had some decent jobs? Or that you held a job for a long period of time?

Just thought it was kinda strange since most of us are full-time students, so much time could we have to dedicate to work?

I actually have 6 yrs work experience tho LOL

It’s a criteria for consideration, but not a necessary criteria. It can deflect low enrollment, low grades, etc., in addition to demonstrating responsibility etc.

Adding on to what KGZotU said…employment history helps them get a better and more rounded understanding of the person you are and what you’ve accomplished with your current situation in life.

To answer your questions directly:

Do they just want to know that you have some work experience? - Yes, they want to know if you have work experience.

Or that you had some decent jobs? - If you have a job, or have had a job, then yes they want to know about it. I don’t think they judge on the type of job unless it is perhaps related to your major, especially if you’re engineering or pre-med (I’m totally assuming here).

Or that you held a job for a long period of time? - I don’t think they look at it from the point of view of “Ok, now let’s see how long of a period of time this person held this job.” Again, they really just want to know about your background.

Sit tight and good luck!

For UCB, they state that jobs generally hold no influence in the admission process unless they are what they call a “good job,” one which is required for sustenance, not pocket money. Usually they make the distinction through personal statements, etc.

ektaylor- i sure hope what you’re saying is correct. i’m looking pretty good now. :)

“Having a job that combines academic content, responsibility, and/ or special skill improved the odds of gaining a good read score, as did working because the family needed money. The “good job” scale is the sum (ranging from 0 to 4) of these attributes. Readers identified students who contributed to their high school or hometown community, ones who would likely contribute to Berkeley campus life, and students who demonstrated “spark, pluck, energy, grit, insight, maturity, or originality, relative to the Berkeley applicant pool.” The “character” scale ranges from 0 to 3 – a point each for contributing in the past, being likely to contribute to Berkeley, and for “spark, etc.””

“Applicants who did not work scored zero on the good job scale as did applicants who worked at jobs that had no academic content, gave them no responsibility, required no special skill, and merely facilitated discretionary spending.”

There is the section I was talking about in its entirety.

Is there a part for Transfers on the Berkeley pdf file?

Not that I have been able to find; if you find one, post it on CC, lol.

i wonder what they would rate a “just to put it on your application, looks and sound nice, but doesn’t really mean anything” job? lol hopefully they wont see right through me.
