Back again. I have one d in Boyer at Temple. My second d is interested in Music Therapy with voice as her instrument. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. She is a junior.

Look at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. They have an excellent Music Therapy Department and have invested a lot into it. Small school, nice campus, great facilities and individual attention.

@pianolovers - my daughter is a senior going into Music Therapy with voice as her instrument. Where do you live? We live in CT, and she is looking at: Duquesne, Nazareth, Baldwin Wallace, College of Wooster (which does their MT major at Baldwin Wallace), Seton Hill, Wilfrid Laurier (Ontario), Anna Maria College, SUNY Fredonia and Berklee. She is probbaly going to apply to all of these schools, most of them have given her an application waiver, and we are relying on financial aid packages to help us decide where she’ll end up (single parent, at my income level she will qualify for Pell Grants).

Other schools in our region that have it as a major are Temple, Marywood, and Slippery Rock University. We crossed Marywood off our list because we scheduled a tour and no one showed up from admissions! She didn’t like SLU, although it’s a beautiful campus - she just picked up on a vibe she didn’t care for. And she doesn’t like the area around Temple.

I have a friend who is working as a music therapist, she got her degree from Ohio University and she loved it there (although I have another friend from Ohio who says it’s way too much of a party school, which is not something my daughter is looking for).

D I don’t does she definitely want to do music therapy as an undergrad, or would she want to do vocal performance with grad work in music therapy?

Lesley U. in Cambridge has music/expressive arts programs at both undergrad and grad levels. Berklee has a great grad program in MT. I don’t know much about the schools you mentioned otherwise :)

Lesley’s undergrad is Expressive Arts Therapy, which includes a music component but is not music therapy.

I finally made an account here! I have a daughter who is a senior and intends to major in music therapy also. She is looking at Slippery Rock, Marywood, Elizabethtown and Baldwin Wallace. She eliminated alot of the other music therapy schools in the PA NY OHIO region based on vibe, size or cost. She will be auditioning on trombone.

My son is a recent graduate from Slippery Rock. There musica therapy department is excellent as well as their vocal department. If you have any questions please PM me. I would be glad to answer them for you.

Thanks all for reaponses. She seems to want an urban school. We are from Pittsburgh area. We will have to tour to get “vibes”. @compmom what would be the merit of doing vocal as undergrad and wait on the MT

There is no benefit to doing a full VP degree if she wants to go into music therapy. VP programs are overcrowded and the top ones are very difficult to get into and overall, there are far more graduates being loosed on a market that can’t support them. They are geared for those hoping for a performance degree; there would be 4 years of Music Theory and Music History, Opera Workshop, 3 languages and diction for those plus English, performance requirements plus two recitals and all of the other required courses and gen eds, and then she would have to get a graduate degree in Music Therapy ( MT is the abbreviation for Musical Theatre on the board, just so we don’t get confused!). Those Therapy programs want proficiency in either piano or guitar too, because most places have the former and the latter is portable! With the undergrad degree, especially if she has the education degree with it, she is employable right away, and could possibly get her employer to help pay for her graduate degree.
There are some good programs out there so do your research. The reason that I suggested she look at Nazareth College is that they’ve built an on campus clinic with state of the art facilities which takes the worry of “where will my clinical placement be” out of the picture.

Thanks @Mezzo’sMama I will check them out. Is it true that MT don’t get the best teachers?, that they are reserved for the VP majors

Naz is a smaller school, pianolovers, and I believe that the voice teachers will take students from across the range of music majors (you can PM me if you’d like some recommendations there). You are correct though in your assumptions regarding teacher assignments at larger schools; the vocal performance students do work with the better faculty, which when you think about it, is as it should be. This is one of the reasons why I suggest schools like Naz for students interested in Music Therapy- they have access to more faculty, the dept chair has terrific contacts in the “work world” and internship placement under those conditions can be very successful.

It does look like a great school. We are looking to go this fall for a open house. They are offering them on sat would it make sense to do a sample lesson? Would that work on on a sat ?

Do MT majors do sample lessons while looking at schools. We did this for d in piano performance?

No, it’s not common for music therapy majors to go for sample lessons. But that’s not saying that it’s impossible, so it doesn’t hurt to try!

PM me if you are visiting Nazareth - a friend of mine is on the voice faculty there.

My daughter loved Nazareth - when we visited, our tour guide was a Music Therapy major (and a senior) who had tons of great information for us.

Thanks @irishmomof2. We look forward to our visit

We have now visited Duquense, Nazareth and Boyer. D has doubts now about music therapy and leaning more toward vocal performance. I have older D who is in piano performance at Boyer. We wre told early in her process that if she could see herself doing anything else she shouldn’t go into performance. Does that apply to vocal as well? My younger also has a gift with children but has lost interest in music therapy and is clear about not wanting to do music Ed. What should she/we be thinking about now. She has had sample lesson at Nazaereth that was very positive. She will have one tomorrow at Boyer. Her private teacher says she has what it takes to major in performance. She is a junior in HS with almost a 3 octave range. I know nothing about music but am told that is unusual for her age.

Please lend any thoughts or advice in helping to know what to consider.
Thanks
