I had a question regarding the transfer of credits from study abroad. I'm a rising sophomore and I plan on going abroad, hopefully all of Jr. year in Japan. Does anybody know if classes taken abroad can count towards the IR Thematic Concentration, particularly the regional and comparative analysis?

I was also wondering if anybody knew how the New IR Curriculum is going to affect the Class of 2010? I heard the New Curriculum has more of an emphasis on expanding thematic concentration, but I've heard that the Class of '10 has the option of sticking with the Old Curriculum. Does anyone know anything regarding this?

I should have probably made separate threads, so I apologize.

I'm not sure about any of this, but I assume that certian classes can count, and others can't, depending on the class. Obviously they're not going to let you count a math class taken in japan for your thematic concentration, but a japanese history class almost certianly would. I believe you're going to have to check specifically about each class, but i think generally, if the cirriculum fits it counts and if it doesn't it doesn't. Especially if it's a Tufts program.

Next, I assume they're going to let us (2010) follow the old curriculum. I'd be upset if they suddenly made me change my plans. Do you have a link to the new one? I haven't heard anything about this.

Hi there,

I'm an IR alum ('07) who went abroad for the whole year. You do have to get every class you take abroad, especially if it's a non-Tufts program, approved by the IR department. If you walk into the IR office in Cabot, they can orient you.

Thanks Lola. You and blurinka always seem to know the answers to my inquiries. Much appreciated.
