Im curious, is there any “required” english course at brown for freshmans? Anything like a mandatory Lit AP equivalent that must be taken?

The reason I ask this if because I don’t want to take Lit AP next year (I’m gr11) and am scared that I would have to take if I get accepted to brown. If there is such a mandatory course, I’d rather take it in HS and skip it…

Does such a mandatory “english” course apply to other ivies also?

You're grouping the Ivies together like they all have similar course requirements... I'm not sure about all of them, but I do know that the Ivies are 8 extremely different schools. All I know is that Cornell requires 2 freshman writing seminars.

How could you apply to Brown without knowing that they have an open curriculum? That's ridiculous. Learn something about college instead of just going down the stupid USNEWS list.

My reply to this thread got deleted in the "blackout" thing so I'll summarize:

Be nice, guys! Remember how hard it is to be a junior and keep track of all the different schools you're exploring?

Brown has a completely open curriculum -- no required English classes. Even so, I'd recommend that you take the lit AP class, because it'll probably make you a stronger writer and reader, and also make you look better on your college aps! If, come May of your senior year, you are already in to Brown, you can do what I did and just not bother to take the exam itself, since you won't get any credit or placement for it.

About other schools -- most do have some kind of English requirement, whether it's a required freshman writing class or just part of a distribution requirement. Check with other schools about this. Often a 4 or 5 on either of the English APs will get you out of all or part of this requirement.

For Cornell, a 5 in ap lang or ap lit will skip you out of one freshman writing seminar, but 5's on both will not skip you out of both. I don't think a 4 will skip you out but I might be wrong. It's on the website.
