re-starting CC up in Michigan Tech

Ok, my son is going elsewhere, but I just wanted to look over the fence at the other schools he had applied to...Michigan Tech was one of those. I was shocked to see that NO ONE has posted to Michigan Tech for over a year. Come on, people!!! This is a special school in a special place. It takes unique individuals to go there, yes, but it is well worth taking a look at. There are generous scholarships, a solid reputation in engineering (esp mechanical), and tons of things to do. If you're an outdoors person, you'll be in heaven. College is all about finding the right 'fit'. Find out for yourself by doing research. I just wanted to keep this forum alive for any CC'ers out there who are looking at this school.

Yes, Michigan Tech is a hidden gem. My best friend goes there. However, it’s a bit too “low-tiered” for the majoirty on CC. Look at most of the non-name brand schools and you’ll see boards just as dead. It’s sad, really.

My son has been accepted to Michigan Tech. I would love to hear more from people that attend/ed and their experiences with the school. We are about 85% sure he will attend, but would love more information.

Hi there, my son submitted his application on Oct 11th. How long did your son wait for his acceptance letter? My son is very serious about MTU as well and since we live in NJ is way too far to go visit, so I would really appreciate some information about MTU. It sounds perfect on their website and almost everywhere I read about it.

My son applied in late July. His acceptance letter came in the mail on September 16.

Did you apply for the Leading Scholar? I am anxious to hear back regarding scholarships. We are in Texas, and traveling will be expensive for us as well, but my son is bound and determined to go.

Good luck to your son, I sincerely hope he gets in.

Let’s keep in touch.

Thank you and congratulations to your son!
Unfortunately my son missed the deadline for Leading Scholar. I believe it was Oct 15th. Anyhow we did try the net price calculator on their website and based on his GPA and SAT scores they show pretty good merit scholarship. I hope they come close to that when the actual letter comes.
My son’s first choice is Purdue, but MTU is on his top 3 list. I personally think that a smaller, more compact campus with small class size is better fit for him. He also loves snowboarding and there is plenty of that at Houghton.
I am sure that your family did their research about MTU, but I can share some of the websites we used to look at colleges.

My son received his acceptance letter last night. He is very happy. We’ll wait for the financial aid package to decide.

Congrats CCU2013!!!
My son applied to Purdue as well, but since his acceptance letter came from MTU, he doesn’t seem to care about getting accepted anywhere else. He hasn’t visited but is sold on MTU for the small class sizes, the reputation of the engineering program, and all the outdoor activities.
We also tried the net price calculator, and I too, hope that what is shown is close or better when the financial aid letter comes in. We’re hoping he’s considered for leading scholar as well.
MTU is definitely going to be an adventure for him.

He also received an acceptance letter from Embry Riddle - Florida. I like this school as well. It’s even smaller than MTU and has very good reputation in engineering. Now is getting tougher to decide. I think I like both equally, but the final decision is his.

CCU2013 - Congrats again!!! I don’t know anything about Embry Riddle. I’ll have to look them up. Seems like you’ll have some tough decisions to make. Our sons are a good place, having the benefit of acceptance and choices so early in the year. I wish Purdue had rolling admissions, so we’d possibly know sooner. They were at his school yesterday for a college fair. He spoke with them again. I’m trying to get him to keep an open mind, but I, too, am falling in love with MTU. It will certainly be different from what he’s used to, being a Texan all his life.
My son has been accepted to 3 schools, but again, he has his heart set on MTU.

Thank you. He submitted his Purdue application couple of weeks ago to meet EA deadline. I believe they’ll start sending letters out by the end of November. I know Purdue is a good college for engineering, it’s just so big, he’ll be literally a number. I keep reading about MTU and I am too - loving it. Here are some of the websites I go to:

My family took our daughter to visit this past weekend and we were all very impressed. The setting on the Portage River is beautiful. We met an academic adviser and the head of the chemistry department and both were very helpful. There is an abundance of outdoor activities. You can see the ski hills right across the river. Looks like the students have easy access to the professors and research is encouraged right way. This looks to be my daughters top choice after her visit.

My son is there now as a transfer student. This is his 2nd semester there. He fell in love with it and the whole campus. The kids work really hard and that’s been good for him. Yes, it’s cold but they don’t seem to mind. There are lots of outdoor activities and it’s a beautiful setting. I’m happy to answer any questions.

I’m so glad that more people joined this discussion.
What major is your son in? My son is interested in mechanical engineering. Can u tell me more about this major if u have information? Also, does your son applied/joined the Enterprise program?
And lastly what is the easiest / less expensive way to get to MTU? Seems so far from everything.

CCU2013 - Thank you for the links above. I’m a stats nerd and love making comparisons between our top choices.

Great question regarding travel. I’m online looking at flights and trying to figure out the best time to visit and the least expensive route. Skywest is the only airline that flys into Houghton. I think traveling via Chicago is our best option, but we will drive in August. The beauty of the internet is that it allows the opportunity to view campuses (if video is available) online, but there is nothing that compares to visiting in person.

Tennisfather - Thank you for providing your perspective. It all sounds so beautiful, and I am more and more certain everyday that MTU is a perfect fit for my son.

Staceys3 -
How is the food there? My son LOVES food. :-)
I’ve read that there is a lot of drinking on the weekends. Is that a concern?
What about dating? The male to female ratio is not very promising for the guys, but excellent for young ladies. How do the students feel about that, and do they venture out and visit nearby schools, etc., for dating? This is not a huge concern for my son, but something I’m curious about.

Are any of your sons or daughter interested in athletics?

International grad student here. Been admitted to the EE class of spring 2014. I have to admit MTU wasn’t high on the list of schools that I had applied to, but as fate would have it, it appears thats where I am headed. That being said, its good to see so many positive things being said about the college. One thing that worries me is its location ( so high up north) and the cold. Lets hope I’m able to cope with it. Any other international/grad student headed there ?

@mom2engineerstud - did you guys hear back from Purdue? My son applied in mid October and still nothing. He got into four colleges so far, but Purdue is definitely his first choice.

I just saw this so I’m sorry I haven’t responded. My son is a computer engineering student. He likes his professors and his classes for the most part. He is finding it to be a challenging major but this is what his heart is set on.
The food is ok I think. He doesn’t really complain about it. He and his friends eat dinner very early every day. There aren’t a lot of fast food choices so he eats what’s there.
Drinking-yes there is some that but I don’t think it’s something that is any more than at most other schools. He is over 21 and does drink but they are pretty busy doing other things too. My older 2 sons went to other schools and there is drinking there too. I think it depends on the kids.
Not a lot of girls that is true. He does have a few girl-friends but no dating yet. He has a girl partner in a lab and some down the hall but not like at other campuses. Yet in walking around they are there!
He isn’t really into athletics but does attend some hockey games and broom ball is a campus wide activity and nearly everyone either plays or watches the games.
There is a huge winter carnival and that is in Feb. I think. You really have to see it to believe it. Classes are excused one day and ice sculptures are made all over the campus by Greek and dorm houses.
I hope this helps and if you have specific questions you can PM me too.

CCU2013 - Purdue will begin admitting students on December 13, so we should all hear something by mid-December at the latest.

Staceys3 - Thank you. Drinking is a concern for me, but he’s my oldest. I guess I just need to relax and trust that he’ll do the right thing at the right time.

Approximately how much do you think a student needs per month to take care of personal needs, supplies, off campus entertainment, etc.

My son wants to play football, but we haven’t done much to pursue that quite yet.

The winter carnival sounds like a magical event.
