I took the ACT with writing a few months ago and am pleased with the essay score (10). I don't want to take it with writing again, but people are telling me that I should. Why? From what I can tell, it actually brought my English score down.

Also, if i took it without writing, should I send it to colleges, even though most require writing? Or should I not send any and then send it all at the end? Basically, when will colleges see my scores with writing?

Most colleges seem to require the ACT with writing. Let's say your first ACT score was 30 with 10 essay. Let's say your second ACT is 33 with no essay. If a college requires the essay, they may not accept your 33 or at best, you would have to send your score of 30 also. Most colleges do not superscore the ACT (mix and match subscores from different test dates). The safest thing would be to take again with writing-you got a 10, you'll probably do well on the essay again. Colleges only see the ACT scores that you choose to send to them.

Go to ACT website and there is a list of which schools require writing portion; most seem to... don't count on anyone superscoring the ACTs, but if you're wondering, call the schools you're intersted in and ask, that is, if it's not clear on the school's website! I don't know why schools only superscore the SATs...Too bad!! ANYWAY I recommend taking it WITH the writing portion just to be safe!!
