Re taking classes...?

So pharmacy is something that I wanted to do for a really long time, (going back to the middle school year) but from my freshman grade is not looking good so far. Because of family issue, I have to work both weekdays and weekend and I commute by bus everyday from school to home. Really, I don't remember having fun or partying at school because helping my dad and studying is all I've been doing literally.

But I guess my study habbit is not very effective...

Basically for my freshman year, I received two C and one C+ and my GPA is around 3.02. (Not to mention those C's are from the pharmacy pre-req which brings me to tears again...) I really feel like a loser because I know that high school and college is different but I went to T.A's office hours, did tutoring for those classes I received C on and always sturied ahead before the midterms/finals. I sometimes sleep for 4 hours just to study more but I feel like my effort never actually shows up...

I guess I have to find my weak point and change my study habbit fast before the second year but I'm really really scared... my dream pharmacy schools were UCSF, USC and UCSD but after seeing my grades... I don't even know anymore. I really like pharmacy but I feel like my grades are not reflecting it....

Should I just give up on those dream schools and just switch my career goal into something else.....?

At first I watned to retake the classes I got C on but I heard that if you didn't receive C- than you can't even consider re taking those classes... I hate myself T^T

Sorry to hear about your situation.
Look on the bright side: with the quarter system, its MUCH easier to bump up your gpa than the semester system since there’s more classes to take per year.

There’s no point in retaking those classes. A better use of your time is to do better in later classes which shows admissions you can handle the workload. I know its hard, but there’s no point on dwelling on the past since you can’t change it. You can however, find out what wasn’t effective and correct your mistakes.

I read from the other thread that 2 of the classes were math.

In this case, was it a lack of understanding the concepts or was it the fact that the teacher threw curve balls on the test? If its the first, that can be solved by studying with others/OH’s/tutoring. If its the second, you probably needed to be exposed to more problems. Unfortunately at UCLA, “knowing” the material and “applying it” are two different things…the more difficult teachers like to take things a step further than understanding their lectures.

If you want a heads up, the last math you need to take, (3C), is a different style: its probability and statistics.

Above all else though, don’t lose confidence! You got here for a reason, and you definitely have what it takes to succeed. Take a break from science next quarter and you can still graduate on time. I’d do that if I needed it, and prep myself to be ready to take sciences winter quarter.

On a side note, is there any way you could get out of working/commuting every weekend? Reducing some workhours would give you time to study, while commuting is always tough. Add in school, and its a rough combination…its hard enough being a student.

Good luck

Wow… thank you very much you don’t know much much encouraging those words were to me. I was really feeling down for this whole week and I was posting in college confidential and also student doctors network because I really thought since I screwed up so much in my freshman I needed to change my career goal and give up. But after reading, I really learned a lot.

I think what most got me was the curve ball because I know I only know the material but when it comes to applying to cencept is it like grrrrr.

Thank you so much for taking your time to reply to this  I guess I have to try to look positive and try to earn some A’s now. And thanks so much for the good news about 3C haha. Its weird I took peers and tutoring for math3b but… I guess my study habbit is like high school and I have to change it before I go to my second year. Thank you so much!!!
