I was just wondering, but how many times have you retaken the SAT? I took my first in October with minimal studying and received a 2200. I just took it again (after studying) in December and I was hoping that it would be my last time (my goal was 2300+). After reading through CC, I realized I'd be lucky if my score didn't go down.

Should I take it once more? How many times did you take it?

I am facing the same dilemma. Two times taking it without considerable success really make me think of taking the ACT. I cannot bear SAT math. It is tricky to me. If you're Junior, yes, try again

I know the official limit is like 3 testings, but I would be wary of testing more than twice unless you feel that you really can achieve a significant increase the third time. I mean, if you couldn't achieve that increase between your first and second testings, is there a special reason why you think you can do it the next time? Why do you think you did poorly this time - was it careless mistakes or did you just have a hard time with it?

So painful to be tortured again, huh
My GPA is 4 right now, hope it shall help my poor SAT performance. God, so nervous! I really have no idea what is my future.

I took the SAT twice. Didn't study the first time, got a 2230, studied for the math the second time, and went down 10 points.

I'd suggest taking the ACT if you don't score as well as you would have liked. It is easier, much less painful, and pretty much everyone does better on the ACT than the SAT (excepting those who took SAT prep courses/had SAT tutoring).

EDIT:

Wait until September of your senior year or June of your junior to take the ACT.

I agree with amb3r. If you go for it, make sure you do it right. While there isn't an official limit, and some people (I think tokenadult) will tell you that if you can test as many times as you want, I would be cautious about the amount of times you take standardized tests. Sure, adcoms may not see the number of times if their secretaries are the ones inputting the scores...but who knows, just play it safe and dont take it like 10 times lol.

If you do feel that you cant do much better on the SAT just go for the ACT. I'm taking it next weekend with no prep :/ but thats only because of scholarship stuff.

Edit: This was my second one, and probably last. I scored a 2310 last June, and with my weakest section being writing, I thought I could improve that very easily (740).

Sorry, there's no official limit! But most GCs and college people think that if you test more than three times, you're overobsessing with your SAT score. So 3 is something of an 'unofficial' limit. (I've seen that mentioned elsewhere on this board) Besides, I wouldn't want anyone to torture himself with four or more sittings of the SAT..

Maybe you can take some time off and return to the SAT in the fall of your senior year. That's what I did, and I saw a nice score increase with practically no studying (after the march sitting in my junior year which I probably overstudied for).

So three tests is OK, but you should make sure you can manage some kind of score increase based on practice tests. Otherwise, just don't do it. It's not great to show colleges three testings where you progressively get lower and lower.. haha :) I know people who actually did have that happen three times, yikes.

I think the reason why I'm so upset about the December test is that I DID study and while I believe I DID improve one CR, I made the most stupid mistakes in math and writing. I know for a fact that I got 1 wrong on math that I shouldn't have and 2 on writing that I shouldn't have. Maybe I should just cancel and retake in March or September?

amb3r, don't worry that 2 or 3 times for official limit, I understand what you mean :)

Yeah, ACT perhaps is more delicious. GOD! TELL ME AM I A STUPID MAN??? WHERE IS YOUR MAGIC, WHY A GOOD AND DILIGENT MAN IS TORTURED LIKE THIS HU...HU...Hu... LIFE IS BURDENSOME.

Ykim, I also took the November one, and because of certain circumstances, like writing a really really bad essay, I decided to cancel. Luckily I did, seeing as how the curves were that bad - I probably would have received something in the 2100s...However, if it weren't for the "off-topic" essay, I would not have cancelled.

Hmmm. How did you feel like you did in the writing mc?

I think my essay was good (certainly not the best, but with good examples), but I don't really have that much room for improvement considering I got an 11 on the last.

This time, I think I probably missed 2 at most, however so far -0. Last time I missed 6 and received an 11 on the essay.

Deciding to cancel last time was really hard for me, because though I knew I missed one in math, and some in CR/W, I could have potentially cancelled a perfect score. Clearly that was not the case, since -1 M was like 750 lol. Idk, I just feel that I would much rather have my score in my own hands and get the questions right rather than count on some rare occurrence of a curve.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'd be lucky if I stayed the same in writing (-3, 11) and the only reason I'm hesitating because I feel CR was significantly better for me this time.

I felt that the writing MC was particularly hard, and since this was my first time taking it, I don't know how they'll grade my essay. I'm just asking for a 10 or higher. :/

December Predictions:
CR: CONSIDERABLY better, maybe -3 at the most.
Math: -1 for sure, maybe -2 or 3.
Writing: Essay was okay, hopefully an 11 or 12, but up to 4/5 incorrect on the writing.

though CR is better, in terms of points, it may only be a 30 point boost (if youre lucky -3 could be 800, but chances are itll be 770 or lower).
Other than that, it seems like you will stay the same or drop in the other sections. I don't know if thats necessarily worth it, especially if you can do the same on CR next time around + improve the other sections. If CR was a fluke, then maybe you should keep it. Otherwise, if you feel you can do better, I'd just cancel and try again...
