Director Shaw has almost every year released decisions a few days before projected date, so lets be hopeful!! :P

Yea that is a good question. I don’t know why the yield rate was an anomaly when it happened. The thing is with SCEA is that its like halfway between EA and ED. U can expect everyoen tht applies ED to a school to be absolutely in love with the school and u can expect that a good amount of normal EA (UNC, uchicago, etc) applicants dont have that school as their FIRST FIRST choice. its usually hard to predict a SCEA yeild rate because they dont know if a applicant gets into a nother top 3 school and pick them over stanford even though they applied scea to stanford.

I don’t think the yield rate was an “anomaly” this year. It has been steadily on the rise for the past few years… and may continue to rise again this year. Many top schools saw an increase in yield this year.

^^agree with cba. As Stanford’s acceptance rate has continued to go down past ALL other schools…Stanford’s yield rate has continuously climbed and will approach 80% or beyond if the projections are correct for this coming application cycle…it will start encroaching on Harvard’s yield rate…

…as the zeitgeist of dream schools has shifted from East to West…no one ever imagined that Stanford would have a lower acceptance rate than Harvard last year…but it did…so ASTUTE/SOPHISTICATED top students now are looking at Stanford in the West ever more fondly…and more confidently choosing to apply to Stanford REA as well as in the regular cycle…because this is where they want to attend…

…and because of this…there will be even more applications this year in the REA cycle as well as regular cycle to make the acceptance rate even LOWER…unfortunately…

I suspect the larger rate of decrease in admit rate in recent years relates to tech being an increasingly popular area in recent years. Over the past couple years, CS has become the most popular major at Stanford and continues to grow each year. Fitting with this, MIT has seen a decrease in admit rate similar to Stanford over the past couple years. And Princeton, which historically has stronger tech programs than HY, has had more rapid decreases in admit rate than HY. If the trend decreases continue, then the class of 2018 admit rates would be approximately:

Stanford – 5.1%
Harvard – 5.6%
Yale – 6.4%
Chicago – 6.8%*
Princeton – 6.8%
Columbia – 6.9%
MIT – 7.6%
Brown – 9%
Caltech – 9.6%

*Chicago admit rate has been decreasing far more rapidly than any other college on this list

Maverick10, I am!
I hope we know sooner then.

It’s funny - I was thinking the same thing a couple of days ago. Stanford seems much more difficult to get into and much more respected than many of the Ivies; I might be biased due to my love for the school but who knows

So I received the email confirming that Stanford processed my common app/writing supplement (turned in early because of arts supplement) and I checked axess for the status of the rest of my materials.

Do they notify if they received an optional letter of recommendation? Everything else has been processed (like the list includes Teacher Rec 1, Teacher Rec 2, etc), but it says nothing about an extra letter that I had my recommender fax in as per Stanford’s instructions.

I don’t think the Application Status lists optional parts of the application like additional letters of rec. It certainly didn’t for me last year.

aviraldg: Am I sure about what, the faxing? I had my rec faxed because at the time, Common App wasn’t letting any of my teachers upload anything, so I didn’t want to force my recommender to deal with that. I also emailed Stanford earlier to make sure, and they told me that either faxing or Common App is accepted.

I certainly hope they received it and it’s just not on the axess list. Not much I can do about it now.

Submitted the app today. Faced one hiccup: when I submitted the supplement, it took me to an error page. However, when I logged out and logged back in, it said the app was submitted so nothing major. And now I wait. I’m thinking the decisions will be released on Dec. 13th (friday before the 15th)

How much weight do they think Stanford places on the smaller questions on the writing supplement (the ones where they ask what you did during the past 2 summers, your favorite books, etc)? Do they do it to get to know you more, or do they actually consider it to some extent in the admission process?

I’m asking because I already submitted my application, but I realize now that I didn’t put that much detail into those questions since I was focusing more on the essays.

Dec. 13th because they seem to always release on Fridays (might be wrong on this but I believe atleast for the past 2 years this has been the case) and before Dec. 15. Dean Shaw has released them earlier so Dec. 6th could be a possibility but with the Common App issues and likely increase in EA apps, I don’t think they’ll get them done by then.
