REA to Caltech?

Hi All,

My daughter is a senior and is applying to colleges this fall. She is among the top 5% of her class in a very competitive high school in California. She has good extracurriculars and some research experience. She is not able to decide if she should apply REA to Caltech or just go Regular Decision. Do chances of admission go up significantly at Caltech when applying REA? Thanks!

From their website:

Caltech’s admit rate is under 5% for both Early Action and Regular Decision and the difference in admit rates is negligible. As such, we recommend it for students who:

  • are excited about the possibility of attending Caltech for their undergraduate career
  • have taken the calculus, chemistry, and physics courses required for admission to Caltech
  • have prepared a competitive application by November 1, including letters of recommendation

Got it. So it’s better to apply RD to Caltech. Why would anyone apply REA then?

If Caltech is a first choice and she is admitted REA, then she can relax the rest of her senior year.

One and done followed by peace of mind if accepted.
