Reach, Match, or Safety?

@catria do you mean pay full tuition without financial aid when you say “full freight”?

I’m afraid so…

I think i might be able to. it is $30,000 at UCB for internationals if im not mistaken

^ That is just for tuition. The CoA is much higher.

There is not really a match or safety on the list. The few state schools are much better than some seem to believe. Illinois and Michigan are very competitive and highly ranked engineering schools. I suppose Washington is the closest thing here to a match/safety.

When you compare results with other international students, you cannot honestly expect to get into most of these schools. It would really come down to your essay and if there is some special interest in your unique ancestry.

^ I agree. UIUC and UMich engineering are high match at best and likely low reach.

what’s wrong with my transcripts that doesn’t place me on par with other international candidates?

At top American schools, there are no cutoffs in terms of GPA and test score, unlike many foreign schools. They look at you application holistically. Topmost schools are reaches for everyone, regardless of their stats.

There is no way to figure out which schools will accept you. You simply apply to them all and let destiny take its course. My son was wait listed at Carnegie Mellon and denied by Stanford and Berkeley (we live in California). He was also wait listed at UCLA, which he felt was the bottom of his list. Make sure that you apply to several safety schools. You will need those fall back schools acceptance letters to piece your ego back together after all the other rejections. I do believe that it is simply luck. The right person reads your application and it speaks to them for some reason and they accept you. Reality is that the odds are against you. I suggest seriously looking at which safety school you would really be happy attending. If you get accepted by an Ivy, great. If you count on getting into an Ivy and don’t, you will be really unhappy. My son is just now getting over the rejection. You can’t take it personally. It is luck! You are all really, really smart and all deserve to go to these top schools. My son had a 2360 SAT, #2 class rank, clubs, sports, college classes, great life experiences, etc. There just isn’t enough space for everyone. So my son will be attending UIUC. It is a beautiful campus with an exceptional EE and CS programs. Best of luck to you!

@bigbossman1‌ all the schools listed are in the United States. Both my reaches, matches and safety schools

@cphibbs‌ thank you very much! I hope your son will enjoy attending UIUC too

@bigbossman1‌ true, i have safety in other countries

bump

I think it’s pretty unlikely that you get into MIT, CMU, or Stanford. Harvard is also a mid-reach as is Wash-U and U-Chicago. UC-Berkely is a low reach. U Michigan and UIUC are high matches. Your odds are lower due to being an international student unfortunately (I’d say berkley and wash-U would be high matches otherwise). You need more safety schools. I think it’s still worth it for you to apply. College admissions aren’t a logical process and luck plays a huge role. Simply put, adcoms are as good as people on this site and determining how impressive of a student one is, and standards are even more difficult to establish for international students. as such, they may misunderstand or overstate your accomplishments and that could get you in. Very tricky for you. But you need some more safety schools and matches.

@theanaconda thank you. This was very helpful

bump

Massachusetts Institute of Technology: Reach
Carnegie Mellon University: High Match
University of Michigan: Match
University of California, Berkeley: Match
Stanford University: Reach
University of Washington: Match
Harvard University: Reach
University of California Los Angeles: Match
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign: Low Match
University of Chicago: Match

Im definetly certain that multiple members of this forum will disagree with these predictions but nonetheless here’s why I’ve stated them:

 1. You show passion for a wide range of subjects. Universities love students like that who dont just show a seires of ECs that they put on their list to impress them or students with perfect academia(they get thousands of perfect score students)
 2. My aunt is the dean of Harvard’s Law school. She said herself “A student that shows passion for what they do, and a determination to make something of themselves is worth a hundred perfect score applicants transcripts combined, because rarely do we ever find a student like that.” Id say that you have passion and that you could seriously boost your chances at many of these schools if you wrote some exemplar essays about them.
 3. I have friends who have had transcripts not as good as yours who have been accepted into the schools i’ve labelled as reaches. They werent athletes, they werent briliant student, they just impressed the universities by showing that they were different, in their essays and things they did as EC’s (Creating new sports and whatnot).
 4. I’ve noticed that people on this forum tend to be a little harsh and exaggerate the impossibility of getting in to these universities. Yes, HYPSM is a reach and very difficult but not impossible to get into.

Good luck OP and defintely apply to all the universities. You’ll never know which might select you.

Thank you @Stanfordnextgen‌ that was really motivating!

How did you increase your SAT score by 700 points?

@AnnieBeats I took an SAT test under exam conditions every week for 4 months till I had learnt completely how to do the test, learn the techniques etc. It takes a while
